WWE Championship Title History (Smackdown)

In September of 2002, then Undisputed Champion Brock Lesnar was officially "drafted" to Smackdown and was no longer permitted to appear on both brands as the World Champion. This then left the Raw brand without a World Champion, so on September 9th, 2002, Eric Bischoff awarded Triple H the World Heavyweight Title since he was the last person to hold both the WWE & WCW World Titles. Since then, the WWE Championship was exclusive to the Smackdown brand.

Update - June 6, 2005: WWE Champion John Cena was drafted to Raw, bringing the title with him. Three weeks later on June 30, 2005, World Heavyweight Champion Batista was drafted to Smackdown, bringing that title with him as well. The WWE Championship has now become the "World Title" on Raw, while the World Heavyweight Championship is now Smackdown's "World Title."

Update - June 23, 2008: WWE Champion Triple H was drafted to Smackdown during the 2008 WWE Draft. At the Night of Champions PPV on June 29, 2008, Triple H retained the WWE Championship against John Cena. Edge also retained the World Heavyweight Title against Batista that same night causing the WWE's two world titles to remain on one brand.

Update - June 30, 2008: The WWE Championship became the new "official" World Title for Smackdown when CM Punk cashed in his "Money in the Bank" briefcase and defeated Edge to bring the World Title back to Raw.
