Welcome to the Armpit wrestling quiz for the week of November 19, 2007. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. This is always a depressing time of year for wrestling fans because Thanksgiving was traditionally the biggest night of the year during the territorial days. Thousands of fans would sell out arenas all over the country, and it was a good time. In 2007, you might see a few scattered indies with 150 fans. It's the nature of the monopolized beast, but still, it's depressing.
This week we continue with the 3rd part of our quiz, "Survivor Series - Part 3."
Last week's answers:
-Helen Hart threw in the towel for Bret. That woman was a saint considering all the craziness she must have been around for decades, and for a lot of the tragedies she had to deal with.
-Bret won the title back at SS '95 from Kevin "Diesel" Nash. Twelve years and thousands of gray hairs later, that man is still main eventing PPV shows.
-At SS '96, Shawn Michaels had Jose Lothario in his corner.
-At SS '97, Kane and Mankind wrestled with a red light spotted over the ring.
-The finish of SS '98, like many other finishes in the past 10 years, was patterned after the Montreal screwjob from SS '97. That finish will continue to be copied for many years to come.
-Kurt Angle debuted at SS '99.
-At SS '00, Kurt's brother Eric Angle got involved in the finish.
Here are this week's questions. Remember, the new rules are that you no longer need to submit your questions, and no winners will be declared. We're just doing this for fun and to honor the forgotten world of wrestling history.
1. 2001 sucked. WCW and ECW went bye-bye, I got laid off in the dot-com bust, Jackie Martling left the Howard Stern Show, the XFL debuted, and the WWF began a streak of incredibly bad booking that is still alive today. But far worse than all that was 9/11, which forever changed the world as you and I once knew it. As for the WWF, who can forget the inept booking of the WCW/ECW alliance? Team Alliance was in the main event of Survivor Series '01, led by Steve Austin. Who headed up Team WWF?
2. Once upon a time, SmackDown was far, far superior to Raw. That's because Paul Heyman was booking it, and when left alone with rich resources, Heyman can do magical things. In 2002, SmackDown ruled the world thanks to hot matches from the likes of the Guerreros, Chris Benoit, Edge, Kurt Angle, and Rey Mysterio. It also featured the return of perhaps the top American performer of the 90s: Shawn Michaels. He won the WWE title at Survivor Series '02, in what type of gimmick match?
3. The McMahon ego was in full effect in 2003, and Vince's match with the Undertaker was a heavily featured part of the show. He wasn't the only McMahon stealing a spot on the card from a more deserving wrestler, as son Shane was also on the show. Shane was featured in perhaps the worst feud of 2003, and it all came to a head at Survivor Series, when he wrestled whom?
4. From a financial standpoint, 2004 was probably the best of Chris Benoit's career. He was given a long title reign this year, and had lots of good matches, the most memorable of which was a superb main event on Raw in the first half of the year. What tarnished the reign was that he was simply being booked strong so that when HHH got it back, it would mean something. Randy Orton ended Benoit's reign, and Survivor Series featured Team Orton against Team HHH. Of all the guys on those two teams (aside from Benoit), only one is no longer with WWE. Who is he?
5. After a great 2004, Benoit saw a reality check as this time (Survivor Series '05) he was back in the prelims losing to Booker T, just like in WCW. Not only that, but he was right in the middle of coping with the loss of Eddy Guerrero, who passed away a week earlier. This particular show was headlined by Team SmackDown against Team Raw. After that match ended, what WWE wrestler returned to the ring?
6. Hey look, we got to see Arn Anderson again! Yes, Survivor Series '06 had a legends team, featuring Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes, Sgt. Slaughter, and... Ron Simmons? While an entertaining performer, especially in his WCW days, he's not exactly the first person people think of when the term "WWE legend" is used. Alas, Ron was simply a last minute sub for a genuine WWE legend. Whom was Simmons replacing?
Answers will be posted next week.
