He has been diagnosed with Lung Cancer and will begging chemotherapy to battle the cancer immediately. Garza’s last match was at AAA’s “Heroes Inmortales” where he took part of the Copa Antonio Pena Battle Royal. Garza is most known by American fans from his time in WCW and his stint in TNA several years ago. Garza has also been a top star in Mexico for both CMLL and AAA for about a decade. He has been partners and rivals of some of the biggest stars in Lucha Libre including Mistico (the original), Psicosis, Juventud Guerrera, Rey Misterio Jr., Perro Aguayo Jr., Konnan, Negro Casas, and many more. LUCHA SPOTLIGHT
Remembering Promo Azteca

In the early 1990’s Lucha legend Fuerza Guerrera (father of Juventud Guerrera) started is on INDY Lucha promotion called PROMELL (Promotora Mexicana de Lucha Libre) and eventually started using AAA stars in his promotion, bunt in 1995 Guerrera left AAA and the relationship between the two promotions ended. Longtime AAA star and (at the time) WCW star Konnan then had a falling out with AAA and ended up helping Mexican television company TV Azteca buy the promotion from Guerrera in 1996. Konnan’s goal was to start up his own promotion that would be a place for WCW luchadors to work in Mexico while they weren’t working for WCW (as WCW had promised to allow all the luchadors to continue to work in Mexico) as well as a place to build new luchadors for the future. Konnan & TV Azteca renamed the promotion Promo Azteca and immediately brought in WCW stars like Konnan himself, Psicosis, Juventud Guerrera, Rey Misterio Jr., La Parka, Super Calo, Los Villanos, Hector Garza, Halloween, Damian 666, Lizmark Jr., El Dandy, Norman Smiley, and Venum along with other lucha stars like future WWE & ECW star Super Crazy, the legendary Blue Panther, Negro Casas, Venum, & others.

Promo Azteca started out hot with all of the WCW stars and the new introduction of one-fall matches (at the time all lucha libre was 2/3 Falls matches) and more hardcore elements. One of the more memorable Promo Azteca incidents was a near riot that happened after a massive Cibernetico Match in 1997. Things got ugly when Rey Misterio Jr. actually turned on Psicosis after the match (one of his few rudo/heel turns) and even ripped Psicsois’ mask off. The fans were enraged and one fan actually hit Rey Misterio Sr. with a chair which he then returned with a chair of his own. Fans all around the arena then started throwing chairs at the wrestlers resulting in a huge melee. The craziest thing is that this one is only so memorable because it was got on camera. According to Rey Misterio Jr. it was just one of many near riots and not the worst one (he talks about a few riots in his book “Behind The Mask”).

Promo Azteca was also the home of several really young luchadors who would later go onto stardom. Super Crazy was first noticed in Promo Azteca before becoming a bigger star in ECW and later WWE. Pantera del Ring would go onto become a star in CMLL as Ephesto, Ultimo Rebelde would become Hooligan in CMLL, and even CMLL superstar Ultimo Guerrero got his start in Promo Azteca. Mr. Aguila, who was later known by WWE fans as Essa Rios, got his start there as well as future AAA & CMLL stars El Zorro and Toscano. Even Japanese stars like Yoshihiro Tajiri, CIMA, and Kaz Hayashi (known then as Shiryu) made some of their first Mexican appearances in Promo Azteca.

The fast paced, high flying, and sometimes hardcore style was fresh but Promo Azteca’s success didn’t last long as WCW feared injury to it’s contracted wrestlers and reneged on the agreement to allow them to work in Mexico. Without it’s top stars Promo Azteca quickly fell apart and by 1998 was done for good. Despite it’s short existence Promo Azteca did have a significant impact on Lucha Libre. The obvious is the future stars it spring boarded like Ultimo Guerrero, Super Crazy, Toscano, El Zorrro, etc. but also the match formats. Promo Azteca used the more Americanized one-fall matches which AAA would later adopt and even CMLL uses in it’s “Lightning Matches.” Also, some of the hardcore elements have been adopted (and some would argue used TOO much) by AAA and all of the “extreme” promotions in Mexico.
