WWE Smackdown
February 4, 2011
Long Island, NY
Report by: Mike Tedesco of Wrestleview.com

“Yes, sir, we promised you a great main event…” The WWE video leads us into the show.

The Smackdown video plays and we’re brought into the arena with a big fireworks display. The announcers talk about Alberto Del Rio winning the Royal Rumble. They then show a WrestleMania piñata hanging over the ring. Del Rio had it shipped in for a big celebration later tonight.

Tony Chimel says it is his privilege to introduce the newest member of the Smackdown announcing team, Booker T! CAN YOU DIG IT, SUCKA?! Booker T comes out to a really nice reaction. He gets in the ring, takes off his jacket, and does the Spin-a-roonie! I can’t wait to listen to him.

EXCUSE ME! Vickie Guerrero and Dolph Ziggler make their way to the ring. Vickie says tonight will be a Smackdown that we will never forget. She has assembled several qualifying matches to determine who will be in the Smackdown Elimination Chamber match for the World Heavyweight Championship. Speaking of the World Heavyweight Championship, this will be a match we will never forget. Tonight the uncrowned champion Dolph Ziggler will team up with Lay-Cool to face Kelly Kelly and Edge. Speaking of that little tramp, Vickie is ordering Kelly Kelly to come out to her ring right now. Vickie screams for her to come out.

Kelly Kelly’s music hits and she makes her way to the ring. She doesn’t look too happy at the moment. Vickie asks who Kelly thinks she is putting her hands on her at the Royal Rumble on Sunday. Vickie says Kelly is the reason and the distraction for why Dolph Ziggler is not the World Champion right now. Vickie says she’s thought all week long about how easy it would be to fire her, but that would be too easy. Instead she’d rather humiliate her and break down her dignity piece by piece. Then she’ll know what it’s like to be the reason and distraction for why Edge isn’t the champion.

Kelly says everyone knows who Vickie is. She’s the one trying to destroy her character – the one who goes through all her stuff in the locker room and is constantly in her personal life. Kelly says she’s sick of it. Vickie said she could fire her but maybe she’ll just quit. Vickie says she has no idea what she’s talking about. Kelly says Vickie is a vindictive, paranoid, power hungry witch, and everyone is sick of her. Ziggler says he doesn’t care what she says Vickie did, she cost him his World Title so she has nothing else to say. Kelly is the reason why he isn’t the World Champion right now. When she ran down and attacked Vickie, the distraction allowed Edge to hit an illegal move – the Spear. They then show a still photo of it.

Ziggler says Vickie can’t reverse the referee’s decision but he just wants her to know that he is the uncrowned World Champion. The only reason why she’s allowed to stand in the ring with Vickie and him right now is because she may be the reason why he officially becomes the World Champion tonight. Until then, they have no use for her.

Kelly slaps Ziggler and then knocks Vickie down. Lay-Cool quickly runs down and they get in Kelly’s face. Edge then runs out and punches Ziggler down. Edge gets Kelly Kelly out of the ring and they go up the ramp.

Mike’s Thoughts

This wasn’t a terrible edition of Smackdown. It was very wrestling heavy, which is never a bad thing in my book. We had a decent segment with the 2011 Royal Rumble winner, giving him some good heat and something to do while he waits for the WrestleMania build. Then we had a ho-hum title match.

I wasn’t really big on tonight’s main event. I was initially excited about it Monday night when Vickie Guerrero talked about Edge being in for a surprise on Friday. I was excited about that until they announced later in the show that it was this overbooked main event. That’s not quite the surprise I was expecting and I was disappointed with the announcement. They shouldn’t have even promoted it on Raw. They should have just left it with the Vickie Guerrero tease. The match itself was what it was. It definitely could have used more interaction from Edge and Dolph Ziggler. They wrestled for maybe a minute and a half and that was it. It was all divas after that. I’d have rather skipped this match and just had next week’s match happen this week. That would have been a better surprise than this.

The Chamber qualifying matches were pretty decent. The Smackdown Elimination Chamber should be pretty good with the talent in it. I don’t think the title will change hands because I like the matchup of Edge and Alberto Del Rio at WrestleMania.

I liked the little celebration Alberto Del Rio had tonight. Del Rio had his fun on Raw so this was just an extension of the party. They got some good heat on him by beating up Hornswoggle. Personally, I don’t know where the heat came from. I know I was cheering when he took that troll out. Anyway, Kofi Kingston should keep him busy at Elimination Chamber as Del Rio waits for the big build to the big show.

I enjoyed the addition of Booker T to the Smackdown announce team. I actually missed Matt Striker for some reason. I guess I just like the guy’s passion because he really sounds like he loves it. Still, it was a good first night for Booker T. There’s a lot of room for improvement but he showed great potential.

Final Rating: ** 1/2
