WWE Smackdown
October 28, 2011
Houston, Texas
Report by: Mike Tedesco of Wrestleview.com

“Yes sir, we promised you a great main event…” The WWE video leads us into the show.

They show some highlights from the World Heavyweight Championship match at Vengeance between Mark Henry and Big Show. Henry delivered a massive superplex to Big Show, and the ring imploded. The match was deemed a no contest. The question of the future of the World Heavyweight Championship is raised. We’ll find out tonight.

Smackdown’s General Manager, Teddy Long, is in the ring. Long says that following the extraordinary events that happened at Vengeance, the statuses of Mark Henry, Big Show, and the World Heavyweight Championship are in a state of flux. Despite the injuries that they both suffered, both Mark Henry and the Big Show are here. Long promises that the future of the championship will be addressed tonight.

Christian’s music hits, and the former World Champion makes his way to the ring before Teddy Long can say anything else. Christian says the future of the World Heavyweight Championship will be addressed right now. There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that what Mark Henry and Big Show did at Vengeance was historic. By historic he means it is history. Big Show had his opportunity, and he blew it. That leaves a huge void in the World Heavyweight Championship situation. Christian says that void will be filled by the man that has dominated this brand for the last five months. Long wonders what he means by “dominating”, and he reminds Christian that he had his head kicked off by Sheamus at Vengeance. Christian says it’s called “resiliency”. That’s the true measure of a champion – to be resilient. That’s exactly what he is. Christian tells him to find somebody who is more resilient than he is.

CM Punk’s music hits, and the Raw superstar makes his way to the ring. Christian continues as if Punk isn’t there. Christian says he deserves one more match. Christian asks what Punk is doing there, and wonders why he’s interrupting him. Long says since Raw has enjoyed using some Smackdown superstars on their “super-shows”, he’s pulled some strings and arranged for some Raw superstars to be here tonight for a Super Smackdown.

Punk thanks Long for having him and says it’s good to be here. Punk says it’s nice to be on a show with some competent leadership. Christian laughs, and says Punk “has never met Teddy Long before.” Punk says Christian has never spent one minute with John Laurinaitis. John Laurinaitis makes Teddy Long look like FDR. Long thanks him, and Punk mentions it wasn’t really a compliment, but he digresses. Punk is here because he’s a huge fan of “Rusty Bird” (Christian). Punk says he’d like to see Christian get one more match. Punk says he’s a fan of Christian’s wrestling ability. Christian stops him and reminds him that he hijacked the WWE Title over the summer. Christian says that was a complete joke. Christian says it’s also a complete joke that John Laurinaitis is considering giving Punk a title shot against Alberto Del Rio.

Punk says that’s why Laurinaitis is so bad at his job. Maybe Laurinaitis is trying to set him up, or maybe he’s considering actually considering giving him a shot. Maybe he’s considering it because, unlike Christian, he doesn’t waste everybody’s time by bitching and moaning. Punk then continues saying, “And bitching, and bitching, and bitching…” The crowd chants loudly for CM Punk. Christian says he doesn’t care whether Punk was invited here or not. Christian says as the leader of Smackdown, and someone who is respected in the locker room, he’s not going to allow him to talk to him like that. Christian tells him to take his pipe bomb back to Raw because nobody wants him here. The crowd chants for him, and Punk jokes that nobody wants him here. Punk then mentions that 10,000 people in Houston want him here. Punk says he’s sure the people of Houston would like to see him in a match against Christian. Long books the match, and Punk says, “Holla!” Christian does not look happy, and he yells at Teddy Long.

Michael Cole, Josh Mathews, and Booker T welcome us to the show. They announce that we’ll see Air Boom take on The Miz and R-Truth next.

This past Sunday at Vengeance, they beat CM Punk and Triple H. On Monday Night Raw, they destroyed Zack Ryder and beat up John Cena. The Miz says they beat John Cena so badly that he had to enlist The Rock’s help at Survivor Series. R-Truth says they must have given Cena some brain damage since he picked the one partner who dislikes him even more than they do. The Miz says if they don’t destroy each other beforehand, they’ll finish the job at Survivor Series.

The status of the World Heavyweight Championship will be addressed later tonight. We’ll also see Christian take on CM Punk in the main event.

Ziggler tells him to step up his game the next time he messes with him. Long says he didn’t put him in that match to mess with him, just like he’s not trying to mess with him by putting him in a match against Randy Orton tonight. Swagger assures Ziggler that they’ve “got” this. Long says Swagger is banned from ringside. They angrily walk off. The cheesy saxophone music hits, and Aksana comes up to Teddy Long. He acts smitten.

Mike’s Thoughts

Ah, I knew I shouldn’t have gotten too excited about last week’s episode of Smackdown. It looks like they were just trying hard because it was Smackdown’s first show in Mexico City. Tonight, they went back to their “Miss it, and you didn’t miss anything” theme for the show.

The show opened up with Teddy Long promising the World Heavyweight Championship situation would be addressed. I wasn’t aware that a match that wound up in a “no contest” constituted a championship’s future being in jeopardy. Christian then came out, and he made a pretty decent case for why he should get another shot. If anything, to me, Christian constantly campaigning for “one more match” is one of the funnier things they’ve got going. That’s just one guy’s opinion. Then CM Punk came out, and Teddy Long announced that tonight was a Super Smackdown. That was just said to get a cheap pop. In actuality, pretty much every Smackdown over the past few weeks has featured Raw superstars in some prominent roles on the show. CM Punk and Christian got into a mini argument, and they set up a main event match.

The Miz and R-Truth pretty handily defeated the WWE Tag Team Champions, and then they went on to put over that John Cena is crazy for thinking The Rock would accept his offer. The subliminal message here is, “Tune in to Raw and find out what The Rock does.”

It was around this time that we saw a Raw replay of what happened to Triple H. They had three segments of the show solely dedicated to what happened on Raw this past Monday. I understand that they need to promote their big show, but I’d bet money that there weren’t more than a handful of people watching tonight’s show that didn’t already watch Raw. One quick Raw Rebound is fine, but devoting big chunks to a two-hour show that is supposed to be your “number two” show is a little silly to me.

Wade Barrett handled Trent Barreta in a quick squash match. I’m interested in the Barrett revolution. Barrett has some ability, he has a good look, and they guy can talk. It’s a shame he’s been so stagnant for as long as he has been. I’m glad he’s getting a mini-push. Hopefully it’ll translate into some success for him.

Randy Orton and Dolph Ziggler had a very nice match tonight. Ziggler has really shined this week after competing in two very good matches at Vengeance. Orton gave him a good match, and that’s pretty much all you can ask for. They’re setting Ziggler up for some big stuff. Cody Rhodes was on commentary, and he did a good job there as well. I’m glad the negative reaction the match against Orton received at Vengeance isn’t going to deter them from putting Rhodes into more segments with Orton. Rhodes is a great talent, and I personally believe he has a winning heel gimmick. A little more exposure, one or two hot segments, and he’ll be looked at as a legitimate threat. I don’t think anyone believed he could beat Orton at Vengeance. They need to do a better job of establishing him as a guy who can really hang in there with Orton.

Sin Cara II cut a promo, and I swear I heard him say “Hunico” in Spanish. No name change has been announced, but it looks like his rivalry against Sin Cara isn’t over yet.

Daniel Bryan and Tyson Kidd had a pointless match set up by a silly little argument backstage. This was just to promote the “Shawn vs. Bret” DVD. They didn’t really have an awesome match either. Normally when you see “Daniel Bryan vs. Tyson Kidd”, you can expect a good match. That wasn’t the case tonight. They weren’t given any time and, let’s face it, the premise for having the match in the first place was incredibly stupid. On a side note, it is interesting to note that Daniel Bryan got zero reaction coming out. They had a wide shot of the crowd when his music hit and no one moved a muscle. The fact that they piped in fake cheers over that shot was embarrassing. I said that there’s plenty of time to build Bryan up for WrestleMania, but that lack of reaction has to be a little concerning to the powers that be. Let’s get this guy going. Get his face some big time exposure at Survivor Series. This guy is going to be in one of your championship matches at WrestleMania for goodness sake!

Big Show was out after this, and he walked to the ring smiling. Tons of people have harped on this aspect of WWE television over the past few years that they’ve been doing this, and I genuinely hate to be “one of those guys”, but damn it if it doesn’t bother me when a guy comes out smiling after losing a big championship match. What are you so happy about? The World Title is the “be all, end all” in the business and – guess what, buddy – you failed to win it. What’s to be happy about? Would it hurt for them to have Big Show put a serious face on and state that he’s not done with his quest? That killed the segment in my mind until Mark Henry, to his credit, and he’s been absolutely killing it these last few months, saved this segment. Henry was flat out awesome and, unbelievably, made me want to see this match again. Mark Henry is the best heel wrestler they’ve developed in the last five years, hands down. Maybe even ten years. Yeah, let’s say ten years.

CM Punk and Christian had a really nice main event that served as a platform to hype up Punk’s upcoming title match against Alberto Del Rio. The match was good, but it will have no ramifications on the future of this rivalry. It also looks like they’re going to continue on with Sheamus vs. Christian. I personally like the match-up, but it hasn’t been well received by their audience on two consecutive PPVs. Would it hurt to freshen up their opponents? I’m personally hanging on to hope that we see Mark Henry vs. Sheamus with the World Heavyweight Championship on the line. That’d be a tremendous December feud.

I know that this will probably alienate my Texas audience, but it’s just for one week. Congratulations to the St. Louis Cardinals for their 11th World Series Championship. That was one hell of a series. Hands down that was the best series I’ve ever watched live.
