NBC to produce new comedy series “Young Rock”, Dwayne Johnson set to appear

NBC to produce new comedy series “Young Rock”

According to a report by Deadline, NBC has given an 11-episode straight-to-series for “Young Rock”, a single-camera comedy chronicling the early days of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who is set to appear in each episode.

It is being said that the project was taken out last fall, with NBC buying it preemptively with a big commitment.

The pilot for the series was co-written by Nahnatchka Khan and “Fresh Off the Boat” co-executive producer Jeff Chiang.

The series is produced by Universal Television, Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions and Khan’s Fierce Baby Productions.

Executive producers are Jeff Chiang, Fierce Baby’s Khan and Jennifer Carreras and Severn Bucks’ Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia and former WWE creative writer Brian Gewirtz.

NBCEntertainment Chairman Paul Telegdy said the following when announcing the project during the network’s Television Critics Association on Saturday:

“The show will feature Dwayne as he grows up through life. It’s Dwayne’s life brought to live by a brilliant and soulful writer like Nahnatchka.”

He also noted that “Young Rock” was the first pitch Khan brought to NBC under her overall deal.  It was also said that She and Johnson pitched the concept together.

There is no word yet as to the actual premiere date for the new series.

Johnson will also be returning to host a second season of NBC’s Titan Games, a new reality series that premiered last year.

Dwayne Johnson currently stars in “Jumanji: The Next Level” which has grossed over $600 million worldwide.

The next film Johnson will star in will be Disney’s “Jungle Cruise”, which is based on the Disneyland theme park ride where a small riverboat takes a group of travelers through a jungle filled with dangerous animals and reptiles, but with a supernatural element.

“Jungle Cruise” is scheduled to be released on July 24, 2020.
