In an interview with The Takedown on SI, John Cena discussed his role with WWE following his retirement in December 2025.
On how he remains involved with the company despite being retired from in-ring competition, the former WWE Champion revealed he has a policy preventing any kind of physicality:
This was the confusing thing about retirement. First of all, I will stay retired — no fall downs. I will not do anything physical. But that doesn’t mean I’m away from WWE. I mean, anyone who knows me knows how passionate I am about not only the sports entertainment business but WWE as a brand. So it was simply a matter of like, ‘So where do I fit in now?’ And we’re still trying to find out those pieces, but I think we got a clear path.
Cena is under contract with WWE as an ambassador, hosting both nights of WrestleMania 42, appearing at Backlash, and being part of Club WWE’s launch.
He notes that he is working with Triple H and Nick Khan as they have sorted out the details for the John Cena Classic, which was announced during Cena’s appearance at Backlash.
The show, an All-Star Game type event pitting main roster stars against talent from NXT, will include a component allowing fans to vote for the John Cena Classic Champion at the end of the show, and losing a match will not disqualify a competitor from the fan vote.
