In an interview with Chris Van Vliet, Kyle Fletcher addressed being in talks with WWE before ultimately signing with AEW.
When asked how close he was to signing with WWE, the TNT Champion responded:
It was a toss-up for a while. We had one official – at the time it was me and Mark Davis as Aussie Open. We had a Zoom call with them, we kinda spoke about what the deal would entail, that sort of thing.
I think when it got to that point – it just didn’t feel like the right fit at the time. We didn’t get super close – it was kinda like at the point where there were options there – but AEW just was the right fit for us at the time.
Fletcher and Davis appeared in AEW on a number of occasions as early as 2022 before officially signing with the company in May 2023.
When asked what made AEW the right fit for the pair, Fletcher cited those early appearances as well as “the vibe” of the company, adding:
To me it was – I don’t want to say the freedom – but I think there’s a lot of trust there, that I can produce the wrestling I want to produce wrestle the way I love to wrestle.
And I think, experiencing that beforehand and knowing that, I think that was what drew me to AEW for sure.
