WWE commented on AEW in a Toronto Star article published on Saturday that focused on the two companies’ rivalry.
WWE took a shot at AEW’s women’s tag team street fight that aired during the December 31, 2021 episode of Rampage by saying that type of “dangerous and brutal display is not appealing” to networks, sponsors, fans, etc.
WWE said in the article, they and AEW are in entirely different business. WWE specifically further noting the street fight as “gory self mutilation.”
WWE made the following statement to the Toronto Star:
“If you look at the gory self-mutilation that bloodied several women in the December 31 event on TNT, it quickly becomes clear that these are very different businesses. We had an edgier product in the ‘Attitude’ era and in a 2022 world, we don’t believe that type of dangerous and brutal display is appealing to network partners, sponsors, venues, children or the general public as a whole.”
The match in question was Anna Jay and Tay Conti vs. Penelope Ford and The Bunny. All the women bled. There were spots that involved thumbtacks and piledrivers through tables. Jay picked up the win for her team after The Bunny submitted from Jay’s rear naked choke with one of her arms wrapped in barbed wire.
