Jon Moxley defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi to become the new AEW Interim World Champion at Sunday night’s AEW X NJPW Forbidden Door.
Back on the special live June 3 episode of AEW Rampage, AEW World Champion CM Punk announced he had a foot injury, which would require surgery. Due to Punk’s injury, AEW CEO and President Tony Khan then revealed there would be an Interim AEW World Championship Eliminator Series to crown a new Interim Champion at Forbidden Door.
