Backstage news on why FTR dropped the AAA World Tag Team Titles

FTR lost the AAA World Tag Team Championships at the promotion’s Wednesday night’s Nocha de Campeones PPV. FTR lost to Dralistico and Dragon Lee, who then relinquished the titles after the match, as Lee announced that he signed with WWE.

According to Fightful Select the title change was done due to FTR informing AAA that they wanted to drop the tag team championships to finish up with the promotion for now and to further their current storyline where they are on a losing streak.

FTR held the AAA World Tag Team Titles for 438 recognized days – the third-longest AAA tag team title reign in the promotion’s history. FTR also dropped the ROH World Tag Team Titles to the Briscoes at Final Battle back on December 10.

Dax Harwood has previously said he believes he and Cash Wheeler’s AEW contracts are up sometime in the spring of 2023. He said he and Wheeler have considered taking time away from national televised wrestling promotions for a period of time.

FTR are still the current IWGP Tag Team Champions. They are scheduled to defend the tag titles against Hirooki Goto and Yoshi-Hashi at the NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17 PPV event on Wednesday, January 4, thus missing next week’s AEW Dynamite debut in Seattle, WA.
