Former WWE Superstar wins MLW National Openweight on 2/28 episode of Underground

On the February 28 episode of MLW Underground that aired Tuesday night on REELZ, John Hennigan (Former WWE Superstar John Morrison) challenged Davey Richards for the MLW National Openweight Title. The current MLW World Women’s Featherweight Champion, Taya Valkyrie accompanied her husband (Hennigan) to the ring for the match. They both played a part in Hennigan winning the Championship.

In the closing moments of the match, Hennigan went for the Starship Pain, but Richards was able to move out of the way. It looked as though Richards was going to retain the title, as he wrenched Hennigan in a submission hold. Duran came down and hopped on the apron and distracted the referee. Valkyrie went into the ring and hit Richards with her title. Hennigan then covered Richards to get the three count to win the championship.

Hennigan returned to MLW back on the February 21 episode of MLW Underground, where he aligned himself with Duran and Sam Adonis. On that episode, Duran set up a title match between Hennigan and Richards.

Richards won the MLW National Openweight Championship when he defeating Alex Kane at MLW Battle Riot IV, which took place on June 23, 2022. However, the match did not air until the November 17, 2022 episode of MLW Underground. Richards is set to square off against Jon Moxley at Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport 9.

Bloodsport 9 will take place on Thursday, March 30, 2023 at the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA. The event can be ordered through FITE TV and has a start time of 4pm PT.
