Toronto based music band Our Lady Peace performed the song “Whatever”, during the band’s 30-year anniversary tour this past Wednesday at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta. The song was used as the entrance theme for the late Chris Benoit.
During a recent interview with the Edmonton Journal, the band’s lead singer Raine Maida said the song carries a strong message pertaining to mental health.
“We’re playing ‘Whatever’, which we did for WWE and it’s kind of got a terrible story attached. But we’re taking it back as there’s a good mental health message.”
During the concert, Maida introduced the song and told the fans they have taken back ownership of the song.
“We decided to take back ownership of this song because it is our song. And it has to do with mental health, and that’s how we’re taking control. This is about not being scared to reach out. And we’ll put a hotline up at the end of the song but for anyone that is struggling, there is hope, there is help, and sometimes it’s just three digits away. This is called Whatever.”
In 2007, Benoit took the life of his wife Nancy and their son Daniel in their home. Benoit then took his own life shortly afterwards.
A fan in attendance at the show, took a video of the band introducing the song and then performing it, which can be seen below:
