Charlotte Flair says she will tap more into Ashley: “The character I made is not relatable”

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, WWE’s Charlotte Flair (real name Ashley Fliehr), told the publication that she hopes to show fans more sides of who she is in real life.

“On the opposite side of WrestleMania, I think I will tap more into that and kind of try to bring me — Ashley, the real person — to Charlotte, because I do feel like Charlotte really isn’t, the character I made is not relatable…If I could be ‘Charlotte’ in my real life, I would,” Flair said. “In reality, if I wasn’t here right now, I’d be in sweats watching old episodes of ‘Sex and the City.’ But no, I feel like at this stage in my career I’d like to pull the curtain back a little bit and show them like, hey I’ve been this hardcore, dominant b—- for however many years. But I’d like to also be able to high-five the kids as I walk down the aisle.”

Also in the interview, which took place during WWE’s Hall of Fame Ceremony Red Carpet, the 39-year old former 14-time Women’s Champion spoke on her divorce from fellow WWE talent Andrade. The two married in May 2022, but divorced in October 2024. The news of the couple splitting was not made public however until earlier this year.

“I’ve felt a bit exposed…I think a weight has been lifted off my shoulders because ‘Charlotte’ had to be so perfect and pristine all the time and people couldn’t separate the character and who I am in real life…So, getting all these things that have been really hard for me off of my chest, like, ‘This is who I am, accept me.’ It feels like I don’t have to — not necessarily hide — but I’m not worrying about, you know, ‘What’s going to happen today?’ Or in an interview, ‘Are they going to ask me and I’ll have to pivot to something else?’ It’s like, this is the authentic me. And it feels really good.”

Just a few weeks ahead of her Women’s Title Match at WrestleMania 41, she appeared on the Sherri Shepherd Show, opening up for the first time about her third divorce. Charlotte told Shepard she felt like she was failing professionally and personally. (The interview is embedded at the very bottom of this article.)

“I felt like I was failing at my job, I felt like I was failing in my personal life.”

Charlotte then went on to say that it was also “the embarrassment of being divorced again” and “being compared” to her father, WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair that was weighing on her. Ric divorced his fifth wife Wendy Barlow last September. Prior to Andrade, Charlotte was previously married to Riki Johnson from 2010 to 2013 and Thomas Latimer from 2013 to 2015.

Charlotte was unsuccessful in capturing the WWE Women’s Championship from Tiffany Stratton at WrestleMania 41 Night One. She earned the title opportunity after making her surprise return at the 2025 Royal Rumble this past February and winning the Women’s Rumble Match.

During the April 4 episode of WWE SmackDown, Stratton and Charlotte reportedly went off script during an in-ring verbal exchange, which saw Stratton make reference to Charlotte’s three failed marriages. Charlotte then fired back by saying Stratton’s real-life boyfriend, Raw talent Ludwig Kaiser, with Charlotte saying he was in her DM’s. WWE edited this part of the segment that aired on the company’s digital media platforms. However, the USA Network did not scrub that part of segment from the video on cable channel’s YouTube account.

She was out of action for all of 2024, after she tore her MCL, ACL and Meniscus during a botched move against Asuka at the Tribute to the Troops Special on December 8, 2024.
