WWE reveals scrapped SummerSlam plans on ‘Unreal’

An episode of the Netflix series WWE: Unreal has revealed very different plans in the works for the 2025 edition of SummerSlam.

In the fourth episode of the show’s second season, a whiteboard is listed showing potential matches for the premium live event including:

  • World Heavyweight Championship: CM Punk vs. Gunther
  • Sami Zayn vs. Seth Rollins (w/ Bronson Reed)
  • Women’s World Championship: IYO SKY vs. Naomi
  • Rhea Ripley vs. Asuka
  • Finn Balor (The Demon) vs. Dominik Mysterio
  • WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship: The Bella Twins vs. Liv Morgan & Raquel Rodriguez

Of the ideas written down, the only match that happened exactly as planned was the Punk-Gunther title bout headlining night one.

Seth Rollins cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase after the match is a key plot point of the season, with WWE trying to keep up the ruse involving the kayfabe knee injury.

Liv Morgan’s shoulder injury essentially derailed plans for a Bella Twins return, and Rhea Ripley ultimately joined the Women’s World Championship for a Triple Threat Match.

With the planned match against Balor dropped, Mysterio defended his Intercontinental Championship against AJ Styles.
