Wrestling fans around the world were shocked by the announcement that Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling will be running two joint shows in May of this year. The first will be “Global Wars” and will take place Saturday May 10th at the Ted Reeve Arena in Toronto, Canada. The second will be “War of the Worlds” on Saturday May 17th at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. New Japan’s top wrestlers will be making the trip overseas for these massive events. Over the next few weeks rohwrestling.com will be announcing the names of the New Japan stars that will be competing at these events.
Shinsuke Nakamura
The “King of Strong Style” is coming to ROH. The “strong style” of Japanese wrestling is a style that includes hard martial arts strikes and submission style holds. The mixed martial artist Nakamura, has used this style to become one of the most successful stars in New Japan history. He is a former three-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion, two-time Intercontinental Champion, and a former IWGP Tag Team Champion. He is also a former winner of the G1 Climax Tournament.
The former “Super Rookie” has come a long way in New Japan since his 2002 debut. Aside from winning championships and tournaments in New Japan, Nakamura has seen success wrestling all over the world in an attempt to improve his skills. He has challenged some of the toughest wrestlers in the world including a bout with Brock Lesnar for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship in 2006.
With other “Strong Style” wrestlers within the ROH ranks, “The King” of New Japan’s “strong style” will be able to put his ability to the test against some of the best athletes in North America, and in the world. He’s defeated some of the best ever in Japan, and in the world, but his Ring of Honor challenge is sure to be the toughest of his career.
