Replay: Last week on Raw, The British Bulldog was cutting a promo when Marty Jannetty attacked him and Jim Cornette. Clarence Mason was able to escape.
The British Bulldog w/ Jim Cornette vs. Marty Jannetty

The bell rings, and they circle the ring. Bulldog hooks a side headlock, so Jannetty whips him off. Bulldog runs him over with a shoulder tackle. Jannetty gets up and soon hooks a side headlock. Bulldog whips him off and absorbs a shoulder tackle. Jannetty hits the ropes, so Bulldog leapfrogs him. Jannetty puts the brakes on and pokes Bulldog in the eyes. Jannetty wrenches the arm, so Bulldog whips him off. Jannetty gets out of a military press and goes for a roll-up, but Bulldog holds the ropes. Jannetty ducks a clothesline and a big boot attempt. Bulldog blocks a kick, but Jannetty connects with an enzuigiri for a two-count. Jannetty applies a hammerlock and kicks at Jim Cornette. Bulldog whips him off and military presses him before dropping him throat-first on the top rope.
Video: Clarence Mason appears in some pre-recorded comments. Mason says he did some research and faxed a memorandum of law to Interim WWF President Gorilla Monsoon. On December 17 at In Your House, The British Bulldog will face the winner of the Bret “Hitman” Hart vs. Diesel match for the WWF Championship.
Back to live action, Bulldog has the advantage and hits a delayed vertical suplex. Bulldog grabs him by the hair and slams him down. Bulldog applies a rear chin lock. Back from the break, Bulldog is applying a rear chin lock. Jannetty fights out and hits the ropes. They take each other out with stereo shoulder tackles. Bulldog soon crawls over for a two-count. Bulldog goes back to the rear chin lock. Jannetty fights up, so Bulldog slings him out of the ring. Bulldog distracts the referee, and Jim Cornette gets some cheap shots in. Bulldog grabs Jannetty on the apron, but Jannetty shoulders him and goes for a sunset flip. Bulldog keeps his balance and punches Jannetty in the head. Bulldog stomps Jannetty’s head for a one-count. Bulldog goes back to the rear chin lock. Jannetty fights up and backs Bulldog to the corner. Jannetty hits some shoulder thrusts before punching him. Jannetty whips him to the opposite corner and charges, but Bulldog moves. Jannetty lands in the tree of woe. Bulldog stomps away at him until Jannetty collapses to the mat. Bulldog hits a snapmare and goes back to the rear chin lock. The referee checks on Jannetty. The arm drops once… twice… Jannetty keeps it up before dropping a third time. Jannetty fights up, but Bulldog sends him to the corner. Jannetty hits a back elbow before going to the second rope for a flipping cutter.
Jannetty punches Bulldog and sends him into the ropes for a leaping back elbow. Jannetty punches Bulldog back. Bulldog reverses a whip, but Jannetty grabs him and drives his face into the mat. Jannetty goes to the top rope and goes for a diving fist drop, but Bulldog moves. Jannetty lands on his feet and hits a DDT. 1… 2… Bulldog gets a foot on the bottom rope. Jannetty sends him to the corner, but he hits the ring post when Bulldog moves. Bulldog connects with a Running Powerslam for the win.
Winner by Pinfall: The British Bulldog
Video: A fake Bill Clinton, who is the current President of the United States, is shown in front of the Washington Monument. The fake Clinton says the WWF is America’s best export and will attend Survivor Series on November 19.
Mike’s Thoughts: Seriously, what the actual… you know. In what universe is having an actor impersonating the President of the United States a good idea for a PPV draw? This is among some of the dumbest stuff the WWF did. Sadly, this isn’t the first time the fake Bill Clinton appeared at a PPV broadcast. What did they hope to accomplish with this? For all those people who say Vince McMahon is a creative genius, explain this. When the business was red hot, it was a combination of great characters and a strong creative team around him. He had way more down creative years than good ones, so it was more of these fake president impersonators than great stuff. Business-wise, I can’t take anything away from him. But I can’t help but scoff when people talk about his creative prowess.
Dok Hendrix is ringside with The British Bulldog and Jim Cornette. Hendrix says Bulldog had a great victory in the ring and in the boardroom. Cornette says Gorilla Monsoon was forced into doing what was right. Monsoon doesn’t get credit. Davey Boy Smith will meet the winner of Diesel vs. Bret Hart for the title. At the December In Your House, they’ll get the title around Bulldog’s waist and show he should have been there all along. As for the Wild Card foolishness at Survivor Series, it’ll be Yokozuna, Owen Hart, Dean Douglas, and Razor Ramon against The British Bulldog, Ahmed Johnson, Sycho Sid, and Shawn Michaels. Monsoon is dividing the balance of power in the World Wrestling Federation. Cornette warns Shawn Michaels that if he tries to double-cross Bulldog, Syracuse will look like a walk in the park. Bulldog will take him apart.
Bulldog says he barely broke a sweat with Marty Jannetty. This is his and Cornette’s dream come true. He’ll meet the winner of the Survivor Series WWF Title match in December at In Your House. Bulldog flexes.
Mike’s Thoughts: Decent match with The British Bulldog and Marty Jannetty (though way too many rest holds, an awful symptom of the marathon tapings), and a good interview segment after. I have to say that, for as much as has gone wrong in 1995, they’re really handling The British Bulldog super well since his heel turn in August. They’ve made him look like a top-tier heel, even giving him a pinfall victory over WWF Champion Diesel. Unfortunately, his PPV main event against Diesel at In Your House was horrific, but they’re turning the proverbial lemons into lemonade with a really logical booking decision to round out the year. Since Bulldog technically won the match at In Your House by Disqualification, with the winner of that match supposed to be facing Bret Hart at the Survivor Series with the title on the line, they parlayed that into a main event for the December In Your House PPV. Smart booking decision. There weren’t many of them in 1995.
Locker Room Segment
Barry Horowitz is talking with Hakushi and Bret “Hitman” Hart. Hart says he and Hakushi will be number one tonight.
Bret Hart and Hakushi will team up to battle Jerry Lawler and Isaac Yankem.

Video: This past weekend on WWF Superstars, Jerry “The King” Lawler was interviewing Goldust when Bam Bam Bigelow interrupted. Bigelow says he doesn’t know what Goldust is and challenges him to a match anywhere. Goldust quotes Ben Hur from 1958. Goldust says Bigelow will remember the name “Goldust.”
Bam Bam Bigelow will battle Goldust at the WWF Survivor Series.
Replay: This past weekend on WWF Superstars, Hunter Hearst Helmsley attempted to spray Henry O. Godwinn’s slop bucket with some of his cologne. Godwinn chased him off by threatening to slop him.
Hunter Hearst Helmsley will battle Henry O. Godwinn next week on Raw.
Henry O. Godwinn vs. Terry Richards
Referee: Jimmy Korderas
They lock up, and Richards backs him to the corner before kneeing him in the midsection and hitting some forearms. Richards sends him to the corner and charges, but Godwinn sidesteps him. Godwinn hits a scoop slam, followed by an elbow drop. Godwinn applies a side headlock and drives his head into the turnbuckles. Godwinn puts Richards’ neck on the bottom rope and drops a leg. Godwinn rips at Richards’ face. Godwinn sends him into the ropes for a back elbow. Godwinn clubs his back. Richards tries to fight back, but Godwinn cuts him off. Godwinn sends him into the ropes and hits a Slop Drop for the win.
Winner by Pinfall: Henry O. Godwinn
Godwinn rolls Richards out of the ring and looks like he’s setting up to slop him. All of a sudden, Hunter Hearst Helmsley leaps off the ring steps and hits an ax handle. Godwinn goes down. Helmsley grabs him and hits a Pedigree on the floor! Helmsley puts on some white gloves, daintily picks up the slop bucket, and dumps the contents on the head of Godwinn. Godwinn is slopped with his own slop. Helmsley heads to the back and does his blueblood bow.
Mike’s Thoughts: There’s not much about this feud with Hunter Hearst Helmsley and Henry O. Godwinn that excites me, but damn that Pedigree on the floor was nasty. Helmsley didn’t release Godwinn’s arms to soften the blow. Instead, Godwinn went up and came crashing down on the ringside mats. You can see on TV just how thin those mats are with concrete underneath. That’s a NASTY bump. The slopping was fine. It’s clear they have big plans for Helmsley’s future.
Oh, and that jobber? Terry Richards? That guy will eventually go on to become Rhyno of ECW. Last week, we had the future Balls Mahoney jobbing. This week, we’ve got Rhyno. It’s pretty cool that some of their enhancement talent went on to become huge names. We’ll have to keep an eye out for other enhancement talents as we continue on.

WWF Survivor Series Slam Jam
Todd Pettingill is shown in the merchandise pit usually reserved for Dok Hendrix. Pettingill says the countdown is on to the WWF Survivor Series on Sunday, November 19, exclusively on PPV. King Mabel made a challenge to The Undertaker. Undertaker has answered the challenge. Undertaker will captain the Dark Side against The Royals. Undertaker will team with Fatu, Henry O. Godwinn, and Savio Vega to take on King Mabel, Jerry “The King” Lawler, Hunter Hearst Helmsley, and Isaac Yankem, DDS. Everyone is wondering what the Undertaker’s face will look like.
Video: Paul Bearer is standing in a cemetery with The Undertaker. We don’t see Undertaker’s face. Bearer says they won’t be able to stand the sight of his gruesome face. Undertaker says no royal will survive the wrath of him. All royals will rest in peace.
Back in the merchandise pit, Pettingill talks about the WWF Championship match at Survivor Series.
Video: WWF Champion Diesel is shown, and he says the stipulations are now in place. Gorilla Monsoon has decided on three things: no countout, no time limit, and no disqualification. It’s man against man. For the third time, he’ll battle Bret Hart. This will be their last. We’ll finally find out who is the best. Bret Hart, the Excellence of Execution, against Big Daddy Cool. Diesel doesn’t like Hart’s odds.
Pettingill says this will be the biggest WWF Championship match of all time. Next week, Hart and Diesel will meet face to face.
Back to the ring, Kama is heading down with Ted DiBiase.
“The Mayor of Merchandise” Barry Didinsky is at ringside. He’s holding a bag containing 1,000 Mad Caps with two slammers. It’s $21, a holiday gift from Didinsky.
Mike’s Thoughts: I remember these better as POGs from when I was a kid in the mid-90s. These are Mad Caps, which I can only assume are a knockoff of POGs. Talk about fads, this is right up there with Beanie Babies, but at least no one spent their life savings trying to buy a Princess Diana POG. Neither POGs nor Beanie Babies are worth anything. I never got into either fad, but I’m pretty sure there’s a box of Beanie Babies from my wife’s childhood hiding somewhere in the attic.

Replay: A slow-motion replay is shown of Ahmed Johnson hitting Yokozuna with a scoop slam last week on Raw.
“The Supreme Fighting Machine” Kama w/ “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase vs. Tony Roy
Referee: Jack Doan
The bell rings, and Kama wrenches the arm before taking him down. Kama wrenches the arm and trips him. Roy grabs Kama’s arm and applies a hammerlock before taking him down. Kama charges, but Roy sidesteps him and rolls him up for a one-count.
Shawn Michaels calls into the show. HBK says he feels good being back in the ring this past weekend. Vince McMahon says he seemed disoriented in the locker room. HBK says he is hoping that feeling goes away with time. McMahon mentions Ahmed Johnson giving Yokozuna a body slam. HBK doesn’t know anything about him, but he’s excited to team with him. HBK will also team with Sycho Sid at Survivor Series. HBK says he might be beat up by nine guys again. HBK says he can’t get a break unless he makes it himself. McMahon asks for his prediction in the WWF Championship match. HBK says he’s friends with both of them. They’re not getting along too well. There will be a fight.
In the ring, Kama gained the advantage over Roy and crushed him with a right hand for the win.
Winner by Pinfall: Kama
Kama celebrates in the ring with Ted DiBiase.
Mike’s Thoughts: You could ignore the majority of this match because they had Shawn Michaels phone in during it. Michaels had just returned to action on November 3, 1995, at the Cincinnati Gardens in Cincinnati, Ohio, after the vicious attack in Syracuse. Michaels teamed with Diesel and Bret Hart to defeat Yokozuna, Davey Boy Smith, and King Mabel. They’re laying the groundwork for the future on this phone call with Vince McMahon, mentioning that Michaels appeared woozy in the locker room. Good stuff.
Oh, a little side note: Tony Roy is not one of the WWF jobbers who go on to make it big.
Video: Next week on Raw, Razor Ramon will defend the WWF Intercontinental Championship against Sycho Sid. The 1-2-3 Kid will be the guest referee. The title can change hands on a countout or disqualification.
Jerry “The King” Lawler makes his way to the ring with Isaac Yankem, DDS. Vince McMahon mentions that Jerry Lawler and Isaac Yankem are a tag team item, but a romantic item could be Marcia Clark and Chris Darden, the lawyers from the O.J. Simpson trial. Ok…
-Commercial Break-
Video: The Smoking Gunns are shown playing Milton Bradley’s Karate Fighters. Billy Gunn defeated Bart Gunn. Bart wants a rematch and wins that one. Next week, Vince McMahon and Jerry Lawler will battle.
Tag Team Match
Jerry “The King” Lawler and Isaac Yankem, DDS vs. Bret “Hitman” Hart and Hakushi w/ Barry Horowitz
Referee: Tim White
The bell rings, and Jerry Lawler is miffed with the fans dressed as Goldust as they chant, “Burger King.” Isaac Yankem will start the match against Bret “Hitman” Hart. They circle the ring and lock up. Yankem powers Hart to the corner and punches away at him. Yankem whips him hard to the opposite corner and charges, but Hart sidesteps him. Hart wrenches the arm and attacks the shoulder. Yankem whips Hart off. Hart ducks a swing, but Yankem quickly grabs him in a bear hug. Hart bites his forehead to get out of it. Hakushi tags in. Hart hits a snapmare as Hakushi comes off the top rope with a diving headbutt. Hakushi stomps Yankem and wrenches his arm a few times. Yankem powers him to the corner and drives some back elbows into him. Hakushi reverses a whip to the corner and does a handspring back elbow. Hakushi wrenches the arm and uppercuts him to his corner. The referee backs Hakushi up as Hart attacks Yankem. Hakushi catches Yankem with a Bronco Buster before tagging Hart in. Hart stomps away at Yankem before hitting an inverted atomic drop. Hart hits the ropes and floors Yankem with a clothesline. Hart hits a headbutt to the midsection for a two-count. Hart applies an overhead wristlock. Yankem clubs Hart and sends him into the ropes. Hart ducks a back elbow and hits a running crossbody for a two-count. The kickout sends Hart out of the ring. Jerry “The King” Lawler was threatening to come in to break up the pin. Hart gets on the apron, shoulders Yankem in the midsection, and hits a sunset flip for a two-count.
Hakushi tags back in and sends Yankem to the corner. Hakushi goes for another handspring back elbow, but Yankem clotheslines him in the back of the head! Yankem sends Hakushi over the top rope, but Hakushi lands on the apron. Yankem has his back to him, thinking he’s getting a breather, but Hakushi absolutely crushes him with a springboard missile dropkick, knocking Yankem out of the ring. Hakushi goes for a plancha, but Yankem catches him and drives him into the ring post. Hart gets off the apron, but the referee keeps him back. Jerry Lawler gets a cheap shot in on Hakushi. Yankem drives Hakushi into the ring apron before putting him into the ring. Yankem stomps away at Hakushi before sending him into the ropes for a backbreaker. Yankem picks up a two-count.
Jerry Lawler tags in and taunts Hart. Lawler punches away at Hakushi and hits him with his trademark Piledriver. Lawler gets up and taunts the crowd rather than going for the pin. Lawler calls for a “double feature” and hits Hakushi with a second Piledriver. Lawler taunts Hart and goads him into trying to get into the ring, causing the referee to keep him back. Lawler and Yankem double-team Hakushi with stomps. Lawler chokes Hakushi before Yankem clubs him. Barry Horowitz angrily gets on the apron to try to let the referee know what’s going on. Yankem is now in the ring and sends Hakushi hard into the corner.
-Commercial Break-
Back from the break, Hakushi boxes Yankem’s ears to get out of a bearhug. Hakushi blocks a big boot and trips him. Hakushi rocks him with a dropkick, but Yankem doesn’t go down. Yankem blocks a second dropkick and applies a Boston Crab. Hart runs in, but the referee holds him back. Hart punches Yankem in the head to break up the submission. Lawler quickly tags in and drops some fists on Hakushi’s head. Lawler goes to the top rope for a double ax handle, but Hakushi uppercuts him out of midair.
Hart and Yankem tag in. Hart punches away at Yankem before hitting a bulldog. Hart then punches Lawler as he gets into the ring. Hart clunks the heads of Lawler and Yankem together. Hart hits Yankem with a side leg sweep before going to the second rope for a diving forearm. Hart applies a Sharpshooter to Yankem. Lawler runs in, but Hakushi punches him out of the ring. Yankem is tapping out, but the referee is distracted. Lawler grabs a chair from ringside and gets in the ring, but Barry Horowitz cuts him off. The referee sees Horowitz grabbing the chair from Lawler and disqualifies him.
Winners by Disqualification: Jerry “The King” Lawler and Isaac Yankem, DDS
Barry Horowitz attempts to plead his case, arguing that it was Lawler who brought the chair into the ring, but the referee refuses to hear it. The match is awarded to Lawler and Yankem by disqualification. Hart is furious.
Mike’s Thoughts: I liked this match. Isaac Yankem and Hakushi did a lot of the work. That missile dropkick Hakushi delivered to Yankem was absolutely brutal. As much as I liked the match, the finish was really questionable. First, it just looked so dumb. It just looked really clunky. Second, I just don’t get Bret Hart, the No. 1 Contender for the WWF Championship, being on the losing end of a match against a mostly full-time color commentator and an evil dentist, whose stock is dropping by the week. If this was something they were trying to tie into the title match at Survivor Series being No DQ, then have Hart get disqualified for using the weapon. It’s just odd, odd booking.
Video: The WWF World Tour de Force is coming to the Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio, on Wednesday. On Friday, they’ll be at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. This Saturday, they’ll be in the Worcester Centrum in Worcester, Massachusetts. On Sunday, they’ll be at the Meadowlands Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey. After that, it’s on to the Survivor Series on November 19 from the USAir Arena.

Vince McMahon and Dok Hendrix break down what just happened. Next week, Hunter Hearst Helmsley will battle Henry O. Godwinn. We’ll also see Razor Ramon defend the WWF Intercontinental Championship against Sycho Sid with The 1-2-3 Kid as the Guest Referee. The title can change hands via disqualification or countout. Bret “Hitman” Hart and WWF Champion Diesel will go face-to-face. Ahmed Johnson will also make his Raw in-ring debut.

Mike’s Wrap-Up: What We Learned from Raw
There were some highlights to this show, particularly with the smart handling of The British Bulldog’s claim to a WWF Championship match. I like that they are looking ahead of their bigger Survivor Series show to make their December In Your House show something to keep an eye out for. They also did a good job building up a midcard-ish feud with Henry O. Godwinn and Hunter Hearst Helmsley. Their main event was good, but booking Bret Hart to lose so close to Survivor Series to a team consisting of Jerry Lawler and Isaac Yankem felt extremely questionable.
Still, it was largely a lot of filler. With tonight’s Raw feeling like filler, it’s worth stepping back and looking at what WWF was actually building toward: the 1995 Survivor Series.
History Corner: Survivor Series at a Crossroads
Traditionally, Survivor Series was one of the “Big Four” pay-per-views, alongside WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and the Royal Rumble. But by the mid-1990s, it was losing its identity. The five-on-five elimination matches weren’t drawing like they used to (probably because the characters were so bad… why would you want to see a match with ten gimmicks you couldn’t care less about?), and the WWF was struggling to figure out what the show’s selling point should be.
That’s why Survivor Series 1995 ended up being something of a crossroads event. The card was cobbled together under unusual circumstances: The Undertaker was injured, Shawn Michaels was still recovering from the Syracuse attack, and Diesel’s year-long title reign was limping to its end. HBK actually recovered enough to start back on the House Show circuit in early November, but since these Raw shows were all taped in October after the In Your House show, he still wasn’t cleared, so the build for the PPV was largely done without him. WWF had to get creative, which is where the “Wild Card” match came in. It was a bout that mixed babyfaces and heels on the same team, a concept they never really tried again. It was a gimmick born out of desperation, but it also showed how much the WWF was searching for ways to make Survivor Series feel fresh.
This was also the show where Diesel dropped the WWF Championship to Bret Hart in an excellent match (I’m psyched to recap it), setting up Hart as the top guy again and quietly acknowledging that Diesel’s run as champion hadn’t panned out. In hindsight, Survivor Series marked the beginning of the end of Diesel as the “face of the company” and put Bret back on top until Shawn Michaels was ready for his coronation at WrestleMania XII.
So even if this episode of Raw felt like filler, what it was leading to was actually pivotal. Survivor Series would close the book on one failed experiment (Diesel as “the guy”) and open the door for the next phase of the WWF’s main event picture heading into 1996.
With all that context in mind, tonight’s Raw made some effort to keep Survivor Series and even the December In Your House in focus. Bret Hart and Bulldog made appearances, and Diesel received a mention, as the PPV took shape. However, the lack of urgency here makes it difficult to believe that this roster is ready to stand toe-to-toe with a Nitro lineup that regularly features Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Ric Flair, and Sting.
Episodes like this are also a symptom of the multi-week taping model. By the time you get to week three or four, the crowd is quieter, the booking thinner, and it’s clear this format isn’t built to compete with WCW’s live energy.
So, who won this week in the ratings war?
— WWF Raw (USA Network, taped): 2.6 (Record: 4-3-2)
— WCW Nitro (TNT, live): 2.0 (Record: 3-4-2)
Winner: WWF Raw
For whatever reason on this night, Raw handily beat Nitro, snapping a two-week streak for WCW. At this early stage of the war, the week-to-week ratings still feel random. Sometimes one side wins without offering much of a show, which makes Raw’s victory here more of a curiosity than a turning point. Still, with the way WWF is taping their shows and approaching their storylines and characters, unless something drastically changes, Raw will fall further behind.
The War for Monday Night – November 6, 1995
(TL;DR version)
This Raw wasn’t bad, but it was mostly filler. Bret Hart taking a loss so close to Survivor Series was questionable, though the Bulldog/WWF Title angle was handled smartly, and the Godwinn-Helmsley feud got some shine. Still, the show exposed how thin the roster was and how stale the multi-week taping model had become. Meanwhile, Nitro kept riding its live energy and star power advantage.
Still, Raw snapped Nitro’s two-week streak, but it feels like an outlier. The taped, “business-as-usual” formula won’t keep pace with WCW’s live chaos for long.
