The world didn’t end and 2013 is here! Welcome to the first Impact Wrestling of the New Year and we’re going to kick things off with highlights from last week as well as hype for Sting’s return. Mr. Narrator Guy asks if Sting will get his revenge on Aces & Eights.

Jeremy Borash is in the ring with a trophy for the Wrestler of the Year. JB introduces the 5 choices for the award as a “Hardy” chant starts. The five finalists are Bully Ray, James Storm, Bobby Roode, Austin Aries, & TNA World Champion Jeff Hardy. JB announces the 2012 Wrestler of the Year is…JEFF HARDY! Aries and Roode both started walking down the ramp even before it was announced thinking they would surely win, and neither looked thrilled about Hardy winning. Hardy taunts Aries & Roode as he walks past them to the ring to accept his trophy. Hardy thanks the fans and wishes everyone Happy New Year. He says that he’s the World Champion but this award means just as much, but Bobby Roode cuts him off before he can say anything else.

Bobby Roode asks Hardy if he really just said the peoples votes mean as much to him as the World Title and Hardy says they both mean a lot. Roode says that’s a “bunch of crap” and says that when he was the World Champion there was nothing more important to him than the World Title. He says that he didn’t give a damn what the people thought of him and Hardy says that’s the difference between them, but Roode tells him to shutup and asks if Hardy is really going to accept that award. Roode says he is the one that made history and set records in 2012 as a big “you suck” chant starts. Roode says he doesn’t suck because he became the longest reigning World Champion in the history of TNA, and the fact that he isn’t the Wrestler of the Year is a bunch of BULL…Aries cuts him off before he finishes that one.

Aries says this is obviously rigged because everyone knows that Aries was not only the longest reigning X-Division Champion but he also ended Roode’s title reign. Roode calls him a fluke and Aries says he averaged “4 stars” in ever PPV match and 2012 was “Total Nonstop Aries” and if anyone deserves that award it’s him. Roode and Aries argue both saying “ITS ME” at each other as they touch the trophy. Hardy says it’s over and at Genesis he wants to face both Aries & Hardy in a 3-Way for the World Heavyweight Championship! Hardy tells Aries & Roode to do him a favor and when they think of 2012 think “The Year of the Enigma” and raises the trophy. Aries blasts Hardy in the back!

Aries clips Hardy’s knee and Roode joins in as the two challengers beat on Hardy! Aries and Roode then start arguing over who is going to hit Hardy with the trophy. Finally Aries picks it up but Hardy moves and Aries hits Roode with the trophy breaking it in the process! Hardy hits Aries with the Twist of Fate! Hardy grabs the broken trophy and leaves with it and the World Title as Roode & Aries are laid out.

The announcers run down the card for tonight including a Steel Cage Match, the start of an X-Division Tournament, and the return of Sting!

In the back Storm starts to talk about losing the Wrestler of the Year when Bad Influence interrupts him and Kaz says 2012 just wasn’t a “rhinestone cowboy type of year.” Kaz is wearing a Hulkamania t-shirt with “KAZ” taped over the “Hulk” on the t-shirt. Daniels mockingly uses a redneck accent and runs down all the lousy things that happened to Storm in 2012 and mentions something about “grits.” Storm mockingly laughs at them and says they should be comedians. Storm says just because he didn’t win the World Title in 2012 doesn’t mean he won’t in 2013. He says that the only thing that’s changed are the faces and the asses he’s going to whip on his way. Storm says, “let me say this in a way that you two dweebs will understand. I’ll kick you right in your (Daniels) Twitter and you, I’ll punch you right in your Facebook (Kaz), and right before I log both of you out I’m gonna’ write on your wall…Sorry bout’ yo damn luck! Now do you want to that Instagram thing and do you want to get Direct Messaged out there (in the ring)?” Storm then tells Daniels to drink something besides “piss water” (his martini) and then spits in his glass. Storm says he’s going to walk back to the ring and they can figure out which one of them wants to get his ass whipped by Storm. As he walks away Kaz says “yeah, you forgot about MySpace you turd.”

—-COMMERCIAL BREAK—-

“Cowboy” James Storm vs. Kazarian w/Christopher Daniels

Daniels takes off his jacket like he’s the one that’s going to face Storm, but as Storm was fixed on Daniels getting in the ring Kaz then jumps in and attacks Storm from behind! Kaz puts the boots to Storm in the corner and then chokes him with his “Kazamania” shirt. Kaz hits Storm with a series of forearms and then tosses him over the top. Storm holds onto to the top rope and skins the cat back into the ring. Storm then ducks a clothesline attempt and hits a Thesz Press and lays into Kaz with right hands. Storm hits a clothesline of his own and then tosses Kaz over the top to the floor! Storm hits a Slingshot Plancha over the top onto Kaz on the floor and then chases Daniels away. Kaz hits Storm from behind with a clothesline and then slams him into the guardrail. Kaz gets back in the ring and distracts the referee as Daniels beats on Storm and then tosses him back into the ring where Kaz gets a nearfall. Kaz puts Storm in a chinlock but Storm breaks the hold with back elbows only to get slammed to the mat by his hair. Kaz follows up with a Leg Drop and then slaps Storm around before getting caught with Closing Time out of nowhere from Storm! Storm picks Kaz up and attempts to whip him into the ropes but Kaz reverses it and then goes for a clothesline but Storm kicks his arm away and connects with a Russian Leg Sweep. Storm climbs up top and dives off with a Flying Elbow Drop! 1…2…NO Kaz kicks out! Daniels gets on the apron and Storm goes after him but Daniels avoids him as Storm turns around Kaz nails him with a nasty Running Dropkick that sends Storm crashing into the turnbuckles. Kaz then picks Storm up and hits a TKO! 1…2…NO Storm kicks out! Kaz grabs Storm and again Storm catches him with a Closing Time out of nowhere! Storm then sets up for the Last Call but Daniels gets up on the apron again. He tries to punch Storm but he ducks and then nails Daniels with a Leaping Enziguri! Kaz charges at Storm but he sidesteps him and Kaz is able to catch himself as he leaped into the corner. Kaz then springboards off the middle rope but Storm gives him some free dental work in midair with the Last Call! 1…2…3!

Winner: Storm via pinfall (Last Call)

In the clubhouse Aces & Eights talk to Mr. Anderson about their proposal. They want an answer but he says the harder they work to make him think this is a good idea the more fun they’re having so they should just chill out and have some fun thinking about it a little longer. He says he really enjoys their recruitment process. DOC gets pissed and asks Anderson what it’s going to be because Sting is going back tonight and they need to know right now if he’s in or out. Anderson thinks for a second and says if they’re going to do this then they need to make sure that they show Sting not even an ounce of fear. Anderson then picks up a hammer and tells DOC not to forget his little buddy. Anderson smiles as he hands DOC the hammer. Devon asks one of the prospects if he’s seen his bat but he can’t find it.

—-COMMERCIAL BREAK—-

In the back Kenny King approaches Kid Kash and sarcastically says he remembers watching Kash “back on VHS.” King says the X-Division Tournament is really the “Kenny King Showcase.” King says tonight Kash is going to beat York and next week King is going to beat Zema so it will be Kash vs. King in the Finals at Genesis. Kash reminds King that he’s been the X-Division Champion twice and King does the “peace sign” and says peace. Kash laughs and says he has half of that right (make the peace sign with your hand, remove the index finger and you get his meaning).

A video package highlighting the drama between Sting and Aces is shown.

DOC makes his way out to the ring and he holds the hammer up in the air. DOC calls Sting out and mockingly asks where he is. DOC says it’s now 1-3-13 and Sting has been telling everyone that would listen that DOC is a “marked man” but he doesn’t feel like one. DOC looks down at the hammer and stares as the fans chant “Sting” and then it looks like he switches to another mode as he freaks the hell out. DOC screams that this is “bullshit” and right now he’s tired of waiting because he’s wasting Aces & Eights time so Sting needs to get out here and face the man that will cripple Sting once and for all because DOC IS that man. DOC says this is his final “reckoning call” and then tells him to get his ass out right now. A bat then suddenly falls from the ceiling down to the ring and DOC looks like he’s seen a ghost. DOC looks up to the ceiling and screams that he’s not afraid of him and asks where he is. DOC can’t stop looking to the ceiling as he screams for Sting to come out.

—-COMMERCIAL BREAK—-

Brooke Hogan is shown arriving and she says that she hasn’t talked to her dad.

York sets up for a dive but Kash moves and York is able to stop himself before making the dive. Kash then grabs York’s leg and pulls him out to the floor. Kash naisl York with a nasty chop and then climbs back in the ring and hits a Slingshot Hurricanrana over the top onto York on the floor! 15 years in the business and Kash is still the Master of the Hurricanrana. Kash tosses York back in the ring and then goes for a springboard move but York catches him in midair with a dropkick. York then charges at Kash but Kash sidesteps him and sends York over the top. York goes for a Suplex but Kash blocks it and hit’s a Suplex Throw and then hangs York up in the ropes and nails him with a series of Tazfaces. Kash climbs up top and goes for the Double Spring Moonsault, but York gets his knees up! York hits a leg kick followed by a spinning back kick and then a front kick. York then goes for a Back Handspring off the ropes, stumbles a bit, but catches himself and connects with a Leaping Enziguri to Kash. It looked like York’s foot got caught in the ropes which caused him not to get the spring he hoped for off the Handspring. York covers Kash and gets a nearfall. York picks Kash up but Kash catches him with a Jawbreaker and then goes for a leg kick. York catches his foot and slams him to the mat and then hits a Flatliner! 1…2…NO Kash kicks out! York goes for a suplex but Kash quickly rolls him up! 1…2…NO York kicks out! York gets to his feet and goes for a Spinning Roundhouse Kick but Kash ducks and hits a roundhouse to the midsection! Kash goes for the Money Maker but York blocks it and then attempts a clothesline, but Kash counters into a Backslide! York rolls through and hits the Mood Swing! 1…2…3!

Chavo says that the last time HIS big man met Ryans’ it was like a big cherry tree falling down. Chavo says they’re the tag team champions and they’re not scared of anyone.

—-COMMERCIAL BREAK—-

Tenay calls this next match a battle between two of the most powerful men in TNA and also talks about Morgan & Hernandez’s past between them as former Tag Champions together as well as former rivals. As Morgan and Ryan come out Morgan is in street clothes and wearing a sling on his shoulder. Morgan says that he’s been dreaming of kicking Hernandez’s ass all week but when you’re tossing around 700 and 800 lbs. in the gym accidents happen, even to the Blueprint. Morgan says that he WILL be 100% at Genesis but tonight he’s going to have sit this one out. Morgan says his partner Joey Ryan is going to whip Hernandez’s ass but Ryan was not thrilled about that one.

“Super Mex” Hernandez w/Chavo Guerrero Jr. vs. Joey Ryan w/Matt Morgan

Ryan attacks Hernandez from behind but Mex bounces off the ropes and kicks Ryan and then nails him with a Scoop Slam. Hernandez then hits an over the shoulder Backbreaker on Ryan! Mex sets up for something but Morgan grabs Hernandez’s leg to distract him. Ryan swings at Hernandez but misses and Hernandez tosses Ryan across the ring like a freaking child with the Get Off Me Shoulder Block! Morgan then hits the ring and nails Hernandez with a Spinning Clothesline to cause the DQ. Chavo tries to make the save but eats the Carbon Footprint!

Winner: Hernandez via DQ

—-COMMERCIAL BREAK—-

In the back Kurt Angle tells Wes Brisco & Garett Bischoff that he and Joe got this one because it’s in a Cage. Garett says they would feel better if they were ringside but Joe asks them what part of what Kurt just said don’t they understand. Joe looks like he’s ready to rip a rookie’s head off but Angle calms him down and says he’ll handle it. Angle says they’re being respectful and they just want to help. Angle says it’s a Cage Match and no one is getting in so they’ve got this one. Angle tells Joe that he doesn’t know whats up with Sting but he made a New Year’s Resolution and it’s to unmask everyone of those “sons of bitches” and they’ll start tonight. Joe says he’s with that.

In the back Miss Tessmacher and Gail Kim are warming up for their match tonight as Jesse watches Tara stretch.

A video package highlighting the Brooke Hogan/Bully Ray drama is shown.

Hulk Hogan makes his way down to the ring and says he’s going to cut the crap and get straight to business. Hogan apologizes for his disappearing act last week but he got caught off guard when he saw Bully Ray & Brooke making out 2 weeks in the parking lot. Hogan says since Bully decided to let things go down in the public eye then they may as well take care of business in the public eye again. Hogan calls Bully Ray out to the ring as well as Brooke.

Brooke & Bully come out and Hogan says for months Bully has been coming out and saying how much respect he had for Hogan and wanting Hogan to give him the same respect. He says that he’s also seen Bully in the back talking about “old school” and trying to help the young guys but at the end of the day something just didn’t seem right to him so week after week he’s been looking at Bully and saying what’s the truth? Hogan says there’s a code in this business and Ray owed it to Hogan to fess up to him and tell him what’s going on and now that he KNOWS the question he wants to know is “why?” Ray says Hogan is right and he should have come clean with Hogan and he should have admitted it to Hogan. Hogan says that he’s been trying to tell everyone in the locker room that he knows who Ray is and that he knows Ray is no good. Hogan says Ray doesn’t even belong in this business and then looks at Brooke and says this isn’t about her right now. Hulk says if this was 20 years ago they would have already went to war and since GM’s need to do what GM’s need to do, Bully Ray is suspended without pay indefinitely! Hogan tells Ray to get out of his ring and Brooke freaks out. Hulk says Brooke made her decision so she has to live with it so she needs to get out of his ring too. Brooke & Bully leave together.

—-COMMERCIAL BREAK—-

He says that Park watches video too and we see footage of Park watching matches with Angle, Joe, Hardy, Daniels, and Abyss. Park says he realizes how much potential he has and it’s no different than anything else whether it be football or law school, you have to put the time in and become a student of the game. Park says he will become a student of the game. Davis says Park has shown him something that he wasn’t expecting. Davis tells Park that he didn’t think Park had anything when he first met him but he feels real good about Park now. Park says he’s “ready now.”

FINAL THOUGHTS

TNA threw a TON of stuff at us tonight and I’m not sure how much that sunk in with casual fans because it was at break neck speed.

The opening with Hardy, Aries, and Roode was REALLY good and the 3-Way is the match we all expected. The only thing that hurt that segment was RIGHT AFTER Storm and Bad Influence had an ever better promo together. Storm and Kazarian then had a fun, short match.

I like that they’re giving the X-Division some more shine and York and Kash had a solid match other than the one botch where York slipped up on the Back Handspring. King and Zema have had several good matches so their match next week should be good. All this is great but they need to be bringing in new X-Division stars as well.

Hernandez & Ryan wasn’t really a match, it was just a way for Morgan to heel it up and look like a monster afterward. Mission accomplished on that front.

I’ve grown extremely tired of the Brooke Hogan mess. I’ve been thinking that it’s going to lead to Ray turning on Hogan and TNA and possibly even being revealed as the leader of Aces & Eights the whole time but this thing isn’t keeping me intrigued. Add to that Aces continue to get their ass beat in one on one (or two on two) settings.

The knockouts had a solid tag team match and Mickie continues to look strong.

The Cage Match told a good story with Angle trapped on the outside while Joe had to try and fight alone against the heels until Angle finally got in. The way Sting came back was just odd. We’re so used to seeing him come back after the lights turn out or repel from the ceiling, but this time he just walked down the ramp. That leads me to believe they had problems with the way they wanted for him to make his entrance but either way it was just odd. FINALLY we get another member introduced though. Mike Knox was grossly underrated in WWE/ECW and it will be interesting to see how he can do in TNA, but I’m sure people are already complaining about that reveal on the internet as people have mind numbingly high expectations as to who the members they want to be (I even saw someone say that they wanted Batista to be revealed as a member, get real). I did like how Sting simply dropped the bat from the ceiling during DOC’s promo, that was a nice touch of old school Sting mind games.
