WWE issues apology for Auschwitz image, says they had no knowledge of what was depicted

WWE released a statement to the Washington Post, apologizing for their use of an image from the Auschwitz Memorial Museum, in the video package that aired during the WrestleMania 39 Kickoff show last Saturday.

WWE told the Washington Post they had no knowledge of what the image depicted.

The company said the following:

“We had no knowledge of what was depicted…As soon as we learned, it was removed immediately.”

During Night One of WrestleMania 39, WWE apparently used footage from the Auschwitz concentration camp to promote the match between Dominik Mysterio and Rey Mysterio.

The footage appeared in the video package that aired during the WrestleMania Night One kick-off show last Saturday. However, an edited version of the video package with the image removed aired during the main show.

The footage used was supposed to be where Dominik did his hard times after he was arrested for harassing his family.

Auschwitz Memorial Museum took to Twitter on Wednesday to say that image used to promote a WWE match is hard to call “an editing mistake”. They went on to say that exploiting the site that became a symbol of enormous human tragedy is shameless and insults the memory of all victims of Auschwitz.
