The report Thompson and Ryan Jr. who are lifelong fans of Savage have titled the project Macho. Thompson previously worked with Savage for a Nickelodeon promo dating back to 1999.
Deadline adds the project is based off a completed script by Eric Shapiro and Savage’s brother Lanny Poffo, who passed away on February 2, 2023. Thompson and Ryan Jr. will produce it, alongside Paul Coy Allen of Midas Entertainment Group, with Jonathon Davino, Cory Litwin, Boris Shvarts, and Monica Weber who will serve as the executive producer. Range Select will handle the sales aspect for the project.
Ryan Jr. of Artists For Artists provided the following statement to Deadline, as it relates to the project:
“Macho man Randy Savage was the greatest showman of all time and the OG bad boy of entertainment. His outfits were as electric as his personality and he’s so much more than an artist, he’s an icon. Lanny and Eric did a great job capturing this story and the crazy 80s wrestling era that turnt wrestling figures into life long pop culture icons.”
Thompson added that he is very ecstatic about this project and that he can’t wait to bring the story of Savage to the screen.
“Beyond excited for this one!! Macho Man is hands down one of the greatest of all time and can’t wait to bring his story to the screen!!!”
At the time of the report, there is no further information on the project, such as who will play Savage, when production is set to begin or a release date.
On the morning of May 20, 2011, the former WWE and WCW Champion was driving his Jeep Wrangler near his home in Seminole, Florida, with his wife in the passenger seat. He became unresponsive and crashed into a tree. After paramedics arrived at the scene, Savage was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 58.
