AJ Lee talks on reasons for keeping her marriage to CM Punk private for years

WWE Women’s Intercontinental Champion AJ Lee recently spoke with Us Weekly, where she discusses being married to CM Punk.

Lee notes that outside of the wrestling world, she’s only shares via social media platforms what she feels is comfortable and if she thinks it would help others, including her marriage to CM Punk.

“Something I’ve tried to be purposeful about is sharing what I’m comfortable with and sharing what I think can help people. I don’t really take pictures of my house. I didn’t talk about my relationship for like a decade. I don’t think I even posted my husband on Instagram. I’m pretty private about the stuff that I think is just mine. But when I feel like there’s stuff either I’ve gone through or learned from and I can share that with people and make them feel less alone, then I’m so happy to be an open book. I think that’s why I have this relationship with my fans that feels so tight and everlasting. They’re so good to me because we’ve been vulnerable with each other in that way.”

Lee added that in the past, she has been against doing storylines together with her husband, but decided to go with it for the feud with Becky Lynch, that saw her (Lee) and Punk take on Lynch and her real-life husband Seth Rollins in a mixed-tag team match at last September’s Wrestlepalooza PLE.

“I was very, very, very private with him. But I just felt like, ‘OK, I think we’re 12 years in. Let’s acknowledge we’re married.”

Lee brought up how the last time they were together in WWE together in 2014, they weren’t married at that time, as Punk had already quit the company. Lee left WWE in April 2015.

“It’s interesting because we weren’t married the last time,” Lee said of the pair’s previous tenure in the company. “It’s just bizarre. I was wrestling for maybe a year during the marriage. So this is the first time on the road as a married couple. It is so nice to be able to bring home with you. It’s all very calm. I can always find him at catering or see him in the halls. That’s very, very comforting to me. A wonderful thing is to be able to admire your spouse. I get to admire how well he’s doing and how respected he is and how much fun he’s having. That’s a blast.”

Lee will defend the Women’s Intercontinental Title against former champion Becky Lynch at Night One of WrestleMania 42, while Punk is scheduled to defend the World Heavyweight Championship against Roman Reigns on Night Two of the PLE.

WrestleMania 42 takes place on April 18 and 19 at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada just outside of Las Vegas with a 6:00 pm ET/3:00 pm PT start. The full event will air in the United States on ESPN Unlimited and Netflix for international fans. In the US, the first hour of Night One will air free on ESPN 2, with the first hour of Night Two airing free on ESPN.

Punk returned to WWE at the 2024 Survivor Series, after quitting the company in January 2014. Lee made her return to the company last September.
