Cibernetico Possibly Done With AAA For Good
This is kind of bizarre. It’s been pretty comon knowledge that Cibernetico was on his way back to AAA and that he might possibly be returning at Rey de Reyes, but this past week Wrestling Observor (and a few other sites) have been reporting that he may be done with AAA for good (at least for the forseeable future). Supposedly he was all set to return when he all of a sudden decided to hit AAA up for more money. Well, the only problem is that AAA’s business hasn’t been down without Cibernetico (and many in the lockerroom are happier without him) so they turned him down. There is obviously time between now and Rey de Reyes for this to change but for now it seems he’s done with AAA. So it’s either remain on the INDY circuit (which he isn’t liking too much apparantley) or go to CMLL or try his hand in America or maybe even Japan (where he would not lost long with his poor in ring ability in my opinion, but could possibly get better).

INDY & OTHER NEWS

TNA Cancels Event in Puerto Rico
TNA issued the following statement on their website:
“The TNA Wrestling event scheduled for March 20th in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico has been cancelled. Ticket holders should seek refunds where tickets were purchased.”
Last I had heard was tickets were selling very well and TNA hasn’t given any reason for the cancelation. Kind of bizarre.

Ricky Reyes Crowned New WWC Jr. Heavyweight Champion
I told you guys a few weeks ago that Ricky Reyes had let me know that he would be getting a shot at the vacant WWC Jr. Title on March 7th, well, just yesterday Ricky e-mailed me once again to say that he had won the belt! So, congratulations to you Ricky! He has told me that the crowds at the shows for WWC have been steadily rising and WWC is back on the rise. This is great for the Puerto Rico wrestling scene. Ricky defeated Carlitos, Hiram Tau, Johnny Styles, Angel, & Tommy Diablo in what he described to me as an “X-Match” (which I am guessing is an Ultimate X). Tua actually pulled the belt down but the referee was distracted and ever the oportunist Ricky hit him from behind and grabbed the belt and showed it to the referee. The full results for the show are below in the results section.

Cassandro Officially Signs with TNA
A few weeks back I reported about Cassandro wrestling in a dark match at a TNA Taping Dark Match under the Satanico del Exotico name. Well, Superluchas broke the news about Cassandro officially signing this week and TNA has been promoting a new superstar coming soon called “Andromeda” with this graphic:

http://i41.tinypic.com/a4wync.jpg

Cassandro is expected to debut shortly after the Destination X PPV (possibly at it). His dark match was said to go over very well and the fans in TNA’s Impact Zone warmed up to him pretty quickly. If you’re not familiar with Cassandro, is an Exotico (which is a transvestite or cross dresser) in Lucha Libre most notable for his time in AAA. Cassandro is a great worker in the ring and works the crowd like very few can and is known for his unique ring entrance. This could be an interesting signing for TNA as long as the fans give it a chance.

Dr. Wagner Jr. Talks About His Future
Wagner says the rumors about him possibly going to AAA or CMLL are all untrue because he doesn’t want to be locked into a contract with any major company anytime soon. He also talks about wanting to a Mask vs. Mask Match with L.A. Park which would be HUGE and I guarantee CMLL would throw tons of money to get that match in their promotion.

L.A. Park Speaks About The Ongoing Battle for the La Parka Name
Speaking of L.A. Park who stated this week that the legal battle between he and AAA over the La Parka name and look are still in the courts and he may just win (I’m very skeptical about that). He isn’t able to wear the original La Parka outfit or use the name on any television but he is back to using the old suit in the INDY’s which AAA really doesnt care about. He went on to talk somemore smack about La Parka Jr. (AAA’s La Parka).

– The stipulations of the Gonzalez/Bronco match was if Gonzales was pinned then he would never get a shot at the Universal Title again, but if he won then he would be named #1 contender.
– Corino and Sabu were said to have brawled all over the place and both busted open before the match was done.
– The Main Event was said to be very exciting and all four were busted open in this one as well.

Luchador Spotlight: CMLL Heavyweight Championship

The History of CMLL’s World Heavyweight Championship

In the history of Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) there have been 15 different World Heavyweight Champions consisting of Lucha stars Konnan, Cien Caras Sr., Norman Smiley, Silver King, Apolo Dantes, Rayo de Jalisco Jr., WWE superstar Val Venis, Universo 2000, Mr. Niebla, and most recently Dos Caras Jr. and Ultimo Guerrero. Unlike most World Heavyweight Championships this belt hasn?t always been considered the top belt in CMLL but has always been represented by tremendous wrestlers and matches. Rayo de Jalisco Jr. & Universo 2000 are the only men to the hold the belt on more than one occasion and Universo 2000 is the only man to hold it on the 3 different occasions. Universo 2000 has by far the longest reign to date when he held the belt from December 10, 1999 to April 18, 2003 (a total 1,225 days) and he also defended the belt a record (that still stands) 19 times during that reign. Konnan and Val Venis are the only men to never successfully defend the title at least once and Konnan has the shortest reign from June 9, 1991 to August 8, 1991 (70 days).

The Champions:
1) Konnan (defeated Cien Caras in Tournament Finals 06/09/91)
2) Cien Caras (defeated Konnan 08/18/91)
3) Black Magic aka Norman Smiley (defeated Rayo de Jalisco Jr. in Tournament Finals 11/20/92)
4) Brazo de Plata (defeated Black Magic 06/27/93)
5) Silver King (defeated Brazo de Plata 07/28/94)
6) Apolo Dantes (defeated Silver King 06/23/95)
7) Rayo de Jalisco Jr. (defeated Apolo Dantes 04/14/96)
8) ?Steele? Sean Morley aka Val Venis (defeated Rayo de Jalisco Jr. 04/18/97)
9) Universo 2000 (defeated Rayo de Jalisco Jr. & Cien Caras in Triangle Match after title vacated 10/19/97)
10) Rayo de Jalisco Jr. (defeated Universo 2000 09/13/98)
11) Universo 2000 (defeated Rayo de Jalisco Jr. 12/10/99)
12) Mr. Niebla (defeataed Universo 2000 04/18/03)
13) Universo 2000 (defeated Mr. Niebla 10/12/04)
14) Dos Caras Jr. (defeated Universo 2000 07/08/07)
15) Ultimo Guerrero (defeated Dos Caras Jr. 11/22/08)

When CMLL (then known as EMLL) split from the NWA in 1991 they formed their own World Championships and the first one to be crowned was the World Heavyweight Championship. The tournament including 16 wrestlers (Vampiro, Brazo de Plata, Konnan, Black Magic, Rayo de Jalisco Jr., Universo 2000, Mascara Ano 2000, El Egipcio, Pierroth Jr., Cien Caras, Nitron, Fabuloso Blondy, Mascara Sagrada, Pirata Morgan, El Egipcio, & Gran Markus Jr.) and took place over 3 weeks at Arena Mexico. The wrestlers were split into two blocks (Block A & Block B) consisting of 8 wrestlers each. Those 8 in each block would compete in an 8-Man Battle Royal with the only form of elimination was pinfall and they would battle until only 4 men were left. Those 4 men moved on to the Quarter Finals. In the Quarterfinals they used the same rules as the 1st Round until there was 2 men left. Those 2 men in each Block went onto the Semi Finals and went one-on-one. In Block A Rayo de Jalisco Jr. & Konnan survived to make it to the semi finals where Konnan defeated Jalisco and in Block B Nitron and Cien Caras survived to face off in the Semi Finals where Caras defeated Nitron. In the finals Konnan defeated Cien Caras to become the 1st ever CMLL World Heavyweight Champion. Konnan would then drop the title to Cien Caras in his first defense of the belt two months later. Caras successfully defended the belt on 3 different occasions against Vampiro, Solomon Grundy, & Rayo de Jalisco Jr. before vacated the Championship after following his rival Konnan and the rest of the CMLL contingent that split off from CMLL forming AAA. CMLL then held a 16-man tournament from October 30, 1992 until November 20, 1992 this time in a traditional tournament. This time the tournament consisted of Black Magic (Norman Smiley), Rayo de Jalisco Jr., Sultan Gargola (El Macho), Rick Patterson (Leatherface), MS-1, Popitekus, King Haku (Meng), Brazo de Plata, Aaron Grundy, Gran Markus Jr., Kahoz (Mephisto’s father), Troglodita, Pirata Morgan, Masakre, Vampiro, & El Egipcio. Black Magic (defeating Gran Markus Jr., Kahoz, & Vampiro) and Rayo de Jalisco Jr. (defeating Sultan Gargola, Patterson, & Haku) made it to the finals where Magic pulled off the upset becoming the first ever non-Latino CMLL Champion. Black Magic went on to defend the title a record (at that time) 6 times defeating Villano IV, Tigre Canadiense, Brazo de Plata twice, Rayo de Jalisco Jr., & King Haku along the way before dropping the title to Brazo de Plata (in his third attempt) on June 27, 1993. Plata’s shocking victory was followed up by 3 shocking successful title defenses against Silver King, Gran Markus Jr., & Pierroth Jr. until finally dropping the belt on July 28, 1994 to Silver King. The young (at that time) Silver King went onto successfully defend his belt against his brother Dr. Wagner Jr., Rayo de Jalisco Jr., Pirata Morgan, & Zandokan before eventually losing the title on June 23, 1995 to Puerto Rican superstar Apolo Dantes. Dantes successfully defended his belt against Corazon de Leon (Chris Jericho) in one of the more exciting Title Matches and Vampiro before losing it to Rayo de Jalisco Jr. on April 14, 1996. Jalisco Jr. defending the title successfully 3 times in rematches to Apolo Dantes as well as beating Gran Markus Jr. and Mascara Ano 2000 before dropping it to Steel (Sean Morley aka Val Venis of WWE fame) on April 18, 1997. Steele never defended his belt as he left CMLL to join the WWF and vacated it. CMLL responded by putting the belt up in a Triangle Match between the 3 men that CMLL considered the top contenders: Universo 2000, Rayo de Jalisco Jr., & Cien Caras. Universo was the only man in the match that hadn?t won the title previously and he ended up winning the match and the title that night on October 19, 1997. Universo successfully defended the title against Brazo de Plata, Mascara Sagrada, and Rayo de Jalisco Jr. before dropping it to Rayo de Jalisco Jr. in the 2nd defense against him on September 13, 1998 making Jalisco the first man to ever hold the belt on more than one occasion. Jalisco successfully defended the belt twice against Cien Caras and Mascara Ano 2000 before losing it back to Universo 2000 on December 10, 1999 making Universo the only other person to hold the belt on more than one occasion. This would be by far the longest and most successful CMLL Heavyweight Title reign in CMLL’s history as Universo 2000 held the belt for a record 1,225 days and successfully defending the belt 19 times defeating big names like Mascara Sagrada, Brazo de Plata, Rayo de Jalisco Jr. (on 8 different occasions), Villano IV, Lizmark Jr., Mr. Niebla, & Violencia before finally losing the title on April 18, 2003 to Mr. Niebla at Arena Mexico. Mr. Niebla successfully defended the belt in the rematch against Universo 2000 as well as in matches against Apolo Dantes, Shocker, Rey Bucanero, & Tinieblas Jr. before dropping the belt back to Universo 2000 making him the only man to hold the belt on 3 different occasions. Universe 2000 defended the belt successfully against Dos Caras Jr., Mr. Niebla, Mascara Sagrada, & Dos Caras Jr. again before dropping it to Caras on his third try on July 8, 2007. Dos Caras Jr. went on to be one of the more disappointing champions defending the title only 4 times in his 533 day reign successfully defending it against Lizmark Jr., Universo 2000, and Ultimo Guerrero before dropping it to Ultimo Guerrero on December 22, 2008. Since winning the Championship Guerrero has already successfully defending the Championship against Hector Garza and Shocker and has title defenses already planned against former champion Dos Caras Jr. and Villano V in the future.
