Introduction

I actually did not get an introduction this week. That is ok, I think we all need a break sometimes. Looks like I will just use Michael Buffer to introduce the column.

With that said…

Welcome to the latest edition of “From the Desk of Mr. V”. I am Anthony “Mr. V” Valvo, your WrestleView resident teacher with the same material as last time, but different names, matches, and articles.

So sit back and grab some coffee, a hot cup of cocoa (Hey! It is cold outside), or whatever your choice of beverage may be this week. Relax as you read the 98th Installment of “From the Desk of Mr. V”.

Countdown to Mr. V #100…14 Days! Wow! Two weeks left until the milestone!

Quote of the Week

“This is Frank Drebin, Police Squad. Throw down your guns, and come on out with your hands up. Or come on out, then throw down your guns, whichever way you wanna do it. Just remember the two key elements here: one, guns to be thrown down; two, come on out!” – Leslie Nielsen as Frank Drebin, “The Naked Gun 2 ½: The Smell of Fear”

I believe that the world (especially those in Canada and the United States) lost a great actor in Leslie Nielsen this past weekend.

Teacher’s Lecture

I will be honest with this week’s installment. To me, wrestling was pretty light. I went over what I wanted to go over last week, but let me go through the WrestleView archives and pick out a topic or two.

Ah…here we go!

1) NXT will be back for Season 4.

Thoughts: I don’t know how to react. It is going to be a better season than last, which is for sure.

I just hope they don’t make it as foolish as NXT’s Season Three. I liked the format as guys that never had a chance in the WWE will get time to showcase what they can do. Some of them worked, while others became duds. I looked at the rookies and pros for Season Four and I will give you my thoughts and prediction on who wins as usual. But I am going to need time to “scout” this new batch of NXT Rookies. However on impressions, I say that Johnny Curtis is the most ready. When I watched Curtis perform on FCW Programming, I was very impressed and I really thought that the WWE would have found something for him.

In case you did not watch it or have not seen who is being paired with who, here is the roster.

(Pros in parentheses)

Johnny Curtis (R-Truth)
Byron Saxton (Chris Masters)
Brodius Clay (Ted DiBiase, Jr.)
Jacob Novak (Dolph Ziggler)
Derrick Bateman (Daniel Bryan)
Connor O’Brien (Alberto Del Rio)

I will do some scouting on these “rookies” during my free time on Thursday (I usually get columns done by Wednesday nights). My predictions will be finalized on “The Teacher’s Lounge” (for the VIPers) and in my next column. Stay tuned for who I think will win. I was right (to my knowledge) with the first season and was close in the second.

2) Kaitlyn won NXT’s Season Three!

Thoughts: Well, when I found out that Aloisia was removed from the NXT roster and replaced by Kaitlyn I did not know what to expect since I never saw her in the wrestling ring. I thought she would not have been in the finals because I thought Naomi and AJ were the head of this class.

My opinion is that there was only one reason why Kaitlyn won…Vickie Guerrero. If she was not placed with Vickie as a Pro, many would agree that she would not have won NXT. However, the pieces were in place and she upset everyone to become the Next Breakout Diva. However, I don’t think she has the highest ceiling. Let me just provide my students with my quick thoughts and potential factor for each one of the NXT Season Three Graduates.

6) Jamie – I think she is released from the company, so there goes potential. However, she did have a couple good moments while she was on NXT. She was not good speaking (sounded scripted and maybe forced), but she was fit enough to be a WWE Diva. So since she was released from the company, I have no potential in her.

5) Maxine – The first couple of matches were pretty bad. Her pro, Alicia Fox, I don’t think helped her much as a character. However, as the season went on she was always good when she talked. She had a presence on the mic and I would think if the WWE ever utilized managers again she would be one of the choices. Her wrestling improved, but I doubt she would be remembered for that. One thing she will be remembered is dissing on the Divas and Hornswoggle. Also, she will be known as the one that made out with Swoggle. Potential: Good if they use managers, low-level wrestling diva.

4) Aksana – She started off as a face and looked like a good fit with Goldust. She has the look of a Trish Stratus, but nowhere near the charisma and talent. Aksana’s wrestling was very poor in the ring and at times she did put one of them in danger. I don’t know where she will go, whether they will put her in a story with Goldust or will they just let it go. Was she entertaining? At times, yes. But she needed Goldust to help her get heel heat. Other than that, she had nothing. Potential: low-level diva, might be the next in this batch to be “future endeavored”.

3) AJ – I watched her work in FCW and she was labeled a “firecracker”. That pretty much summed up what she was like in the ring as well. She may have been the most “real” diva when it comes to her character. AJ was also the highlight in many weeks wrestling on NXT as well. Her attitude was like Mickie James’ at her best, she wrestles well, and I think the fans really were won over with her talents. I think the WWE Universe will be ready for her very soon if not now. I will say this again, Melina better not get injured again…because AJ could really fit Melina’s role on the roster. Potential: Mark my words…AJ WILL someday become that Underdog who becomes Divas Champion. However, right now if she competes it will be at mid-level. The sky is the limit for AJ.

2) Naomi – I hate to criticize, but I hope Alicia Fox saved her money. I say this because Naomi is far superior and Naomi has been in wrestling not even three years. She needs to clean up her moves, but her athletic ability will take her very far. She did a good job as a “face” on NXT, but her work as a “heel” in FCW was even better. I think if the voting was not influenced by the WWE audience, she would have won. Potential: High-level diva and a possible Divas’ Title Shot. I think she has great potential, as she does demonstrate talents not seen among the Divas Division in a while.

1) Kaitlyn – I am sure Matt Striker was happy when the winner was announced. Vickie Guerrero took her very far, but what happens when the feud with Vickie is over? That is something I want to see in the future. She was subpar in the ring, but may have won over fans with her attitude. Her mic skills were solid and her character is good. If she can blend her wrestling skills with that, I could see some potential long-term for her. The WWE will have to be patient. Potential: Long-Term she will do well, but now I don’t see her as a mid-level diva.

If you have any comments on what I lectured about, send them to me at mistervwv@hotmail.com.

That sums up my lecture this week. I apologize for the lack of information, but I don’t think anything else was worth a lecture. But all knows how much I like NXT and like to scout the new talent. Are there…

Any Questions?

This is a new topic of mine. Since I am no longer the ROH on HDNet Recapper for powers that I could not control, I decided to add another feature to the column. I looked on my Facebook Wall and saw a few things from my readers and I will do my best to provide some thoughts on them. Also, I will attempt to make my reply brief, but effective for my students. Remember, if not for students there would be no teachers. I see some hands up…

Yes! This comes from Andrew Hayman.

Mr. V., What do you think WWE will do with Sheamus seeing as he has won king of the ring? All my friends think Hunter (V Note: Andrew is talking about HHH, not Hunter Golden) will come back and dethrone him. I personally think he won’t be back till the Rumble. I believe it will be Sheamus vs. the Miz main eventing WrestleMania in some sort of different stipulation whether it be last man standing or first blood. Who knows? But the point of this message is to ask you what you think the angle WWE will go with giving Sheamus KOTR?

Thanks Andrew for the question.

I think the WWE will have Sheamus bully around some more and gloat that he is the King of the Ring and the man that took out HHH. I remember chatting for a moment with Enzo Mendicino (NXT Recapper) and he made a valid point about Sheamus. I tells a good story about how Sheamus took out “The King of Kings” and now is sitting on the throne as the villainous king of professional wrestling.

Sheamus will reign supreme until HHH returns and they will have a good months-long program that may pay off at WrestleMania. Obviously I do not know what goes on in the WWE offices but I do know that when HHH comes back he will fight Sheamus and take back his throne.

I said this before; Sheamus is built like a main event star for years to come. If Sheamus takes out HHH for good, imagine what that would do for Sheamus’ status. I don’t see that happening though, as right now I would predict that they have their epic battle at WrestleMania and HHH will overcome the King.

As for a Sheamus vs. Miz WrestleMania match? I wish I could say that it is possible but I think it is extremely doubtful. I think The Miz’s opponent for WrestleMania will be the biggest face in the company today, so it will either be Randy Orton, John Cena, or someone who wins the 2011 Royal Rumble on the Raw Roster. Who knows? Maybe The Miz won’t be champion by then (I don’t expect it). Also, not to be disrespectful, but I don’t think the main event for WrestleMania should be Miz vs. Sheamus. It has to be between two established stars that the company built around for years. Sheamus and Miz are talented, but not at that level yet.

I see one more hand up…Ok Lester Junior. Please ask your question.

One of my questions is why can’t WWE see they would be better served in a long-term booking sense to have Alberto Del Rio as KOTR instead of Sheamus? Also, what are the odds of Miz keeping his strap past Royal Rumble? Slim at best, I say.

Hmmm……good questions, Lester. Let me try to answer them quickly.

I thought Alberto Del Rio would have been a great long-term King. I watched Smackdown after taping The Teacher’s Lounge on Friday and after Del Rio cost Rey Mysterio his match I wished for the rewind button. I had a feeling Mysterio would be booked to cost Del Rio his seat.

For long-term, I think Del Rio would have benefitted the most. He has the character, the look, and the talent to be elevated at a main event star if he is not there yet. Del Rio could have milked the title until the WWE decided to go with another King of the Ring Tournament. However, I understand why Sheamus won the tournament. It was a good move, but Del Rio would have been a lot better for the role. With a thin roster on Smackdown, Del Rio could have risen high if he had that Crown.

One of the shocking moments of 2010 was definitely The Miz’s WWE Championship Reign. Miz had a good run and this was the top of the mountain.

Will be keep the WWE Championship until the Royal Rumble? I don’t know who else would be champion by then. This could be a shocking thought, but I could really see The Miz holding the title until WrestleMania. Miz has allies that would do anything to make sure he retains the title. Alex Riley can do a tactic and now Miz has Michael Cole if needed (remember, he did cost Lawler last Monday). I know that between now and WrestleMania is four months away, but I think The Miz can carry that title until then. As long as he gets a reaction from the fans, The Miz will be the WWE Champion.

Since there are no more questions, stay tuned for Detentions. Thanks Andrew and Lester for your questions.

Detentions

There were some moments where many a wrestling (or sports fan) fan scratched their heads and said some obscene language. Or they just shook their heads. These listed below are clearly in this category.

The WWE – It is not because of anything recent. It is not because they put Jerry Lawler in the main event. It is not because of booking Kaitlyn as the NXT Winner. It is because they fired Colt Cabana over a year ago! Seriously, what were they thinking.

TNA – I think there was more action backstage from the Thanksgiving Dinner than there was in the wrestling ring. I may be wrong, but it sure seemed like it.

Erick Stevens – I don’t know if anyone else noticed this, but it looks like he lost a ton of weight recently. When he entered HDNet, he was a pretty powerful force. But now, he just looks like a very thin wrestler.

Hornswoggle – I know Dave Stephens will not be happy. But let’s show you an excrept of Mike Tedesco’s Latest Smackdown Recap.

“Jack Swagger is berating the Swagger Soaring Eagle saying his loss if his fault. Swagger walks away and we see Hornswoggle dressed as a Native American. Rosa Mendes serves him a burnt turkey and he doesn’t look happy. Hornswoggle then sees the Eagle and shoots it with his bow and arrow. Hornswoggle grabs his knife and fork and walks off screen. Never mind – Mr. V is not going to be happy with this.” – Mike Tedesco, Recap of 11/26 Smackdown.

Mike Tedesco, you are right. I am NOT happy about this. Not one bit! Hornswoggle killed the poor Eagle and had his stuffing for supper. This cannot be tolerated in professional wrestling, and will not be tolerated in my classroom. On another note, why does Dave condone this stuff? (By the way, I am not serious about the whole “Swoggle killed a bird” stuff. Don’t send me comments on that).

Matt and Jeff Hardy – Matt Hardy once again makes his weekly appearance in the detentions, but I give him credit for switching up the grapes for some French (or Freedom) Fries. However, Lita is over you. Get used to it. As for Jeff Hardy, how the mighty have fallen. Seriously, look at him now. Sure, he has a lot as a heel in TNA but his rant on CM Punk was really foolish. Also, he should get one for that TNA World Championship Belt design. Just awful!

The NFL – For not letting players hit players. It’s their job! I know you want to keep your players safe, but keep it fair. I do feel bad for James Harrison, who has now over $100,000 in fines for his hits. Yet when players deliberately punch other players, they get the same fine as a clean hit. I can’t wait for a lockout.

Derek Jeter – He gets one for asking for way too much money. He is decreasing in skills and he wants over $20 million a year? I wonder what he spent all that money on. I am sure the Pittsburgh Pirates an entire bullpen with that much money only to trade them all for marginal prospects.

Pittsburgh fans who rip on Marc-Andre Fluery – Yeah, now they are silent when he does a good job. He wins a Stanley Cup and yet when he is in a losing streak, idiot fans out there (aka called “yinzers”, credit to Brandon Davis, Josh Tomayko, and Travis Thomas) say it is all his fault. He is the best when he is on his game, enough said.

Bristol Palin (From: Bryan Falk) – for sponging off of her mother’s name for a chance at fame on “Dancing With the Stars”.

To Bryan: Thank you. One of my guilty pleasures was ruined. If she had won, who knows I would have boycotted ABC Programming for a while. Mr. Falk also wanted the vast right-wing conspiracy for keeping her on their longer than she should have been. While I do agree, that can not entirely be the case because the one thing that I learned as a writer is that America loves Train wrecks! Bristol Palin is a train wreck. Thanks for the pick, Bryan.

Finally…

Taco Bell – For forgetting my dang Nachos! Also, bring back the Chicken Flatbread Sandwiches. They are delicious!

Mr. V’s Weekly Honor Roll for November 22, 2010 – November 28, 2010

11/22 – Graded WWE Monday Night Raw Matches
11/23 – Graded WWE NXT Matches
11/24 – Column Writing. After that, I watched ROH…somehow. I have to do favors.
11/25 – Graded WWE Superstars and TNA Impact Matches.
11/26 – Graded Smackdown Matches
11/27 – OFF DAY
11/28 – OFF DAY

A friend of mine told me to keep this segment simple. So unless my column lacks substance, I will add a detailed reason as to why I liked each match. But right now, I will give you a simple top three of the matches this past week.

Keep in mind when you read this portion, I go strictly by wrestling and rarely go with storylines. Though it is called “sports entertainment”, they are trained and are famous by wrestling.

No failing grades in this week’s edition. Also, no match truly stood out to be outstanding. However, please allow me to “Jump the Shark” this week. There was some pretty good wrestling, but actually this honor roll will be highlighted with two women’s matches that I found to be very good and worthy to be in the honor roll. I just hope that you all agree. If not, then I am sorry but it is rare that any of these shows have good women’s wrestling.

Distinguished Honors – Davey Richards vs. Shawn Daivari, ROH on HDNet, November 22.

How it ended – After Daivari attempted (and failed) on the Frog Splash, Richards connected with an Enzugiri and then rolled through into an Ankle Lock. Richards then converted that into a Cloverleaf Submission and Daivari tapped out in the ROH on HDNet Main Event.

Grade: B.

High Honors – Sara Del Ray vs. Daizee Haze, ROH on HDNet, November 22.

How it ended – The two women fought long and hard, but the referee stopped the match after the ten minutes allotted had expired. The match ended in a time limit draw, but if you can get a hold of it try and watch their performance. It was very impressive to say the least.

Grade: B.

Honors – AJ vs. Naomi, WWE NXT, November 23.

How it ended – In a very good match that featured a lot of exchanges and various disciplines in the ring, AJ ended the match reversing one of Naomi’s moves into the Octopus. It took a while, but Naomi tapped out to the submission. Honestly in a company where women rarely wrestle a moderate-length match, this was a very refreshing contest that just edged out the other matches that were given a “B-“.

Grade: B-.

Mr. V’s Gold Star Segment

Gold Stars brought to you by: ColtMerch.com! Take a look at Colt Cabana’s merchandise and you won’t be disappointed.

Also, while you are at it check out www.jrsbarbq.com. Jim Ross has some specials on all the BBQ Sauce you need. Now in some combos you can get a Free JR’s BBQ T-Shirt and even an autographed Kid’s Menu (though it may not do much good). Look at his blog and maybe buy a product or two. I know I will.

So many Gold Stars, so little time. Here are people, places, things, or ideas that I thought earned a Gold Star this past week.

Adam Martin – He earned one for co-hosting “The Teacher’s Lounge” last Saturday. He was willing to sacrifice a lot of his Friday to help tape the show and Dave and I both can’t thank him enough. Last week was busy for me as well, as I was welcomed to be the guest on “The Friday Fishbowl” last week as well. It was a great time doing both shows.

Jose Marrero – I know that he does his work on Fridays, but congrats on getting to #100 before I did. I always say that we are some of the hardest working columnists in professional wrestling.

Dave Stephens – For “Kayfabing” his comments on the 12/22 Raw Recap. I found it humorous of how many people thought he was serious.

Mike Tedesco – He earned one for giving me a shoutout on his Smackdown Recap. Yes, I am still saddened by the release of Goose Mahoney. WWE Officiating has been awful since his departure.

Kaitlyn – She is the NXT Winner for Season 3. She earned it because she went from a replacement to a winner. That is a pretty successful run, even though Naomi and AJ I thought were better.

CM Punk – His commentary is brilliant…just brilliant! He has the best one-liners I have heard and he could probably announce any show by himself. Also, I thought it was great that he gave his good friend Colt Cabana (aka Scotty Goldman) some free publicity with his I *STAR* Colt T-Shirt. I had many who asked for Punk to get a Gold Star and if he keeps this up for another month, who knows maybe a Golden Yardstick Award for Best Commentator is in the mix.

Colt Cabana and Domino – They earned one for a great Art of Wrestling Podcast. If one is new to listening to the podcast one must check this podcast. To check it out, go to www.welovecolt.com.

Claudio Castagnoli – He earned one for staying “Very European”.

Connor Higgins – He is the guy that provides me with a show that I can’t access well anymore (or recap for the matter). I will not say which show just in case Mark Cuban is out there trolling but if you want to check out recent “Honorable” shows, go to this link. Thank you Connor for providing me, as well as other wrestling fans, with a show that we truly enjoy watching every week.

http://stagevu.com/user/GuiltyInnocence

He is leaving off where ROHBrazil since he cannot upload the show anymore.

Sara Del Ray, Daizee Haze, AJ, and Naomi – These four women’s wrestlers put on a great in-ring clinic this past week and should be applauded for their efforts.

Coffee – To those who live by it understand that it is the real Breakfast of Champions.

Angry Miz Girl – You won’t believe how many times that picture appeared on the WWE Chat Rooms. It was quite entertaining.

Mike Foley – For all the charity work that he does. It is nice to hear some good stories from professional wrestlers and Foley clearly is one of the good guys.

Andrew Heyman and Lester Junior – Thank you all for your questions.

Wade Bradford – I appointed him in charge of the Rules for my 100th Column and he has some really good ones.

Zumba – It is a refreshing dancing exercise that I am terrible at. However, when I lose all the weight I gained over the Thanksgiving weekend because of it…well, it does deserve a Gold Star. Now they have a Wii game for it and Mrs. V wants it for Christmas. The video game on my wish list…

I will let you know if I get this game. If I do, Mr. V is taking a break from writing. I know, it is impossible but it is true.

Finally, a Bright Gold Star goes out to Leslie Nielsen. He recently passed away at the age of 84 due to pneumonia. I may be wrong, but I found his acting to be hilarious over the years. Airplane is one of my favorite movies…

He also was the main actor in “The Naked Gun” and other slapstick humor comedies that were classics.

Absolutely tremendous, the world will not be the same. RIP Mr. Nielsen. He truly was one of Canada’s best actors.

Homework Assignment

Due the next few weeks.

Coming soon, I will present my 2nd Annual Golden Yardstick Awards. I pick the top three (or worst three) in each category and choose who I think deserves a Golden Yardstick or, worse, the Rotten Apple.

Some of the categories will be announced, as well as last year’s winners, during the next few columns. I would like to hear from you. Who do you think deserve the awards? I may put it into consideration. We are definitely doing a “fans choice” this year. I will call the “fans choice” edition the…

THE GOLD RULER/ROTTEN APPLE SLICE AWARDS!

I think we all can have a good bit of fun for this.

Also, I plan on a very reader-heavy themed Mr. V #100! Why? I am going to make this reader-themed because if not for my readers I probably would have been done after my 1st column. If not for all of you, I probably would never have made it this far on WrestleView. So, here is the question I would like to present to you.

What would you (whoever you are) like to type a paragraph about. You can be in charge of detentions, rules, gold stars, whatever you would like. Just pop me an e-mail and I will give you what I have available.

Already, I have someone working on the Introduction and the Rules (yep, I never forgot them). I have a couple more who I will assign to a topic as well. Overall, it should be very entertaining.

In other words, after 100 weeks I want to know what the students learned over the course of my column. I expect this to be entertaining because so many of you have great ideas.

Dismissal

Well, that does it for me this week. I thank you all for reading this column and I hope you enjoyed this column as much as I typed it out. If you want to get a hold of me during the week, please e-mail me at mistervwv@hotmail.com or at teacherslounge@hotmail.com, or by leaving me a message on Facebook. I do get a lot of e-mails and may not reply in a timely fashion, but I will do my best to give you a quicker reply.

Now, students you are allowed to leave the classroom. Please push in your chairs, line up straight, and exit to the closest door around you. Until next week, you are all……DISMISSED!

Look for Mr. V on Facebook under Anthony J. Valvo in the Pittsburgh Network. I noticed a lot of you “like” my columns and to all those, I thank you for reading.

Mr. V FINALLY has Twitter. Follow me at http://www.twitter.com/TheMisterV. I have been getting better with my tweets recently. I promise once I get to 100 followers I may do a contest every now and then.

THE TEACHER’S LOUNGE IS NOW AIRING ON SATURDAYS!
