WWE Signs Another Top CMLL Star…or do they?!

This past weekend SuperLuchas.net broke the story that WWE had signed former CMLL multi-time CMLL Champion, Averno. This is HUGE news especially off the heels of CMLL announcing the big Mask vs. Mask showdown between Averno and La Mascara for June. Averno was one of the CMLL stars that tried out with Mistico back last year (along with Diamante) but the WWE decided not to sign him. From what’s being said the deal goes that WWE hasn’t been exactly thrilled with how Sin Cara’s matches have gone thus far and they went to him and asked him if he could work with ANYONE in the world, who would it be. Cara told them Averno who had a LONG time feud (for years) with in CMLL and is the real life best friend of. Averno secretly signed the contract with WWE during WWE’s tour of Mexico last month and Averno NEVER told CMLL and they are hearing about this just as all the fans are, through the internet. This will likely not sit well with Paco Alonso and CMLL, and there IS the possibility that Averno’s planned Mask Match could be canceled now. Supposedly WWE wants to bring Averno in unmasked to work a feud with Sin Cara. This move is a big gamble for Averno as it looks like WWE is bringing him for a specific role and if it doesn’t work out in their minds or after that feud is over, there may be nothing else for him at all, and he is most definitely burning a bridge with CMLL that may or may not be repairable. Then, after all of this information Averno come out on Tuesday and absolutely denied all these rumors. He himself did a interview with the website Record and said that not only has he not signed with WWE but he never tried out with them and hasn’t been offered a contract. He did say that he had some conversations with WWE but it was never anything substantial and then he was critical of all of the media that reported otherwise. He said that a single website, newspaper, or magazine attempted to contact him to get clarification. He said that he’ll prove all of this wrong when he takes La Mascara’s mask. Later in the week Averno’s father did an interview and said that his son, in fact, was going to WWE. His father is also a referee for CMLL. Is this confusing as hell? Yep, but do I think he’s still on his way to WWE? Yep.

Tetsuya Naito Returning to CMLL
This past weekend CMLL announced that former IWGP Tag Team Champion, Tetsuya Naito, would be heading back to CMLL soon (no specific date announced). Naito and his long time partner Yujiro broke up recently when Yujiro attacked Naito and kicked him from No Limit. Naito will likely hang out in CMLL for awhile and then return to New Japan as a top babyface.

Mascara Dorada in Super Juniors
CMLL’s Mascara Dorada continued his quest to win the Super Juniors Tournament in New Japan this week but got setback with losses to former WWE star Taka Michinoku and Kota Ibushi. This weekend and next week he faces legendary Great Sasuke and CMLL Middleweight Champion Rysuke Taguchi.

INDY & OTHER NEWS

EAW Returning

The INDY promotion EAW announced they are making their return in July and claimed some big names would be showing up. Among the names announced were LL-USA’s Marco Corleone, former WWE star Paul London, ROH Tag Team Champions The World’s Greatest Tag Team (Shelton Benjamin & Charlie Hass), former WWE and TNA star Zach Gowan, TNA star Brian Kendrick, LL-USA’s Reby Sky/Rebecca Reyes, Charlie Hass’s wife Miss Jackie, Juventud Guerrera, CMLL’s Mr. Aguila, and Hijo de Rey Misterio. Most of those names sound VERY doubtful.

Hijo de Rey Misterio Debuts
The new Hijo de Rey Misterio (supposedly the other Hijo de Rey has retired) debuted on 05/27 in Tijuana taking part in a Tournament to crown a new WWA Welterweight Champion and he didn’t dissapoint. The new Hijo de Rey Misterio defeated young L.A. INDY star Famous B (a very talented luchador) and then in the finals he beat another L.A. talent in Steve Pain. Clips ended up on Youtube this past weekend and he was definitely impressive. He’s much faster and more athletic than the other Hijo de Rey Misterio much more favoring Rey Jr. than his brother (supposed) did. He’s much smaller than the other Hijo de Rey as well. He used a 450-Splash as a finish and he didn’t look like he was trying to hard to be Rey Jr. (I didn’t see him use the 619 once). He also altered the classic Rey Misterio mask a little as his has a white mohawk on the top of the mask. Picture of the new Hijo de Rey Misterio and video are below (courtesy of LuchaWorld.com):

4) PWR Jr. Heavyweight Title: Famous B def. Mr. Wrestling IV (c) to win the title!
5) Misterioso Sr. & Hijo de Misterioso def. Cazador del Alma & El Dinamita
* NOTES *
– The big story coming out of this show was the debut of Hijo de Misterioso who Misterioso Sr. claims is his son and this is obviously NOT CMLL’s Misterioso II (or Misterioso Jr. as some know him as). Backstage before the show Misterioso Sr. officially “masked” his son in front of the cameras:

– And then he surprised everyone AFTER the event by officially announcing his retirement from the ring.

LL-USA 05/28 “Masked Warriors” TV Tapings Results
1) Nikki Corleone def. Chrissy Cialis
2) Marco Corleone fought Sydistiko to a DRAW via DOUBLE COUNTOUT

5) LL-USA Tag Team Titles Handicap Match: Sol I & Sol II def. El Oriental (c) to win the titles!
6) Rocky Romero & Super Nova def. PR Flyer & San Juan Kid
7) Jon Rekon & Petey Williams def. Jay Lethal & Magno
8) RJ Brewer def. Psicosis II
9) LL-USA Heavyweight Title: Lizmark Jr. (c) def. Rocky Romero to retain the title!
* NOTES *
– This is the 4th (I believe) TV Taping for Season 2 which means about 12 episodes.
– I’m guessing Nikki Corleone is supposed to be some family to Marco but not sure. After that first match Marco, The Right, & Lizmark Jr. had a confrontation in the ring. Lizmark offered to pick opponents for Brewer & Marco, if they won they would earn title shots.
– Sydistiko taunted Marco with a picture of Shane Helms in the hospital (due to his motorcycle accident a few weeks ago) which resulted in them brawling all around ringside leading to the double countout.
– In the Tag Titles match it was revealed that The Sols were the masked men getting involved in Treachery’s matches at the last tapings. Tinieblas wasn’t there to help Oriental so he defended the belts alone. They ended up winning and continuing the beating on Oriental after the match. Mr. Aguila ran out and made the save for Oriental eventually pulling the mask off on of the Sol’s revealing it to be Tinieblas Jr.! Oriental was in shock and LL-USA stripped the belts from The Sol’s so those belts are now vacant.
– When the last TV Tapings Results came out I wondered who Jon Rekon was but it’s actually CMLL’s Strong Man. Jay Lethal was Magno’s surprise partner for this match and he actually came out to his Macho Man inspired gear as a tribute to Savage.
– Brewer beat Psicosis to earn a title shot.
– Former WWE/TNA/ECW star Stevie Richards and former WWE/ROH Announcer Kevin Kelly were announced as the new Announce Team for Masked Warriors. They also announced June 18th as the next TV Taping, but guess what? Still no announcement on when or IF this show is ever going to come back on MTV2. At this point I think our best bet is them somehow getting DVD distribution and releasing these “lost episodes” on DVD.

5) Halloween, Bestia666, & X-Fly def. Tony Rivera, Turbo, & Zumbi
6) Mask vs. Hair Steel Cage Match: Super Crazy lost to Psycho Clown, Monster Clown, Damian666, Murder Clown, & Perro Aguayo Jr.
* NOTES *
– Surprising Main Event result there. It came down to Psycho Clown & Crazy. Crazy ended up getting put through a table and then Psycho escaped the cage and Crazy was shaved in the ring (photo courtesy of Record):

– This is the first time Crazy has lost a Hair/Mask Match since 2004 and it makes him 3-3 in the 6 Hair/Mask Matches he’s been in.
