Ultimo Guerrero In Japan
This week CMLL’s Ultimo Guerrero competed on a Japanese wrestling show in Tokyo on 10/07 called “Mask Nobility Fiesta 2011.” Guerrero along with his teammates, CIMA (of Dragon Gate), and Tiger Mask IV (of New Japan) lost in a Trios Match to Lucha legends Dos Caras Sr. & Mil Mascaras and their partner: the legendary original Tiger Mask. On 10/10 Guerrero will compete on New Japan’s “Destruction ’11” PPV when he teams with Shinsuke Nakamura against Hirooki Goto & Tama Tonga.

WWE-Sin Cara Story
This week WWE posted a story about the history between the two Sin Cara’s back when they were arguing over the Mistico name publicly. Some of it is inaccurate (for one they spelled Mistico’s father, Dr. Karonte’s name wrong) and the real story (at least acording to Sin Cara II/Hunico) is that he pitched the idea to someone in CMLL and then suddenly their Mistico debuted. They’re going with the story here that Sin Cara stole Hunico’s name in Mexico so now he’s stealing the original Sin Cara’s name. WWE’s story is below:

Battle of Sin Caras, ADR Wins Back Title
At this past Sunday’s WWE “Hell In A Cell” PPV the original Sin Cara defeated Sin Cara II in their first matchup against each other to win the rights to the name. The match wasn’t very well received and most thought it was the end of the short feud, but Sin Cara II attacked Sin Cara again on this week’s Friday Night Smackdown tapings. Also at the PPV Alberto del Rio regained the WWE Heavyweight Championship when he defeated John Cena and CM Punk inside the Hell In A Cell. ADR is now a 2-time WWE Champion.
PWR Releases 1st DVD
This week California-based Lucha Libre promotion, PWR, released its first DVD to major retailers in America. The first DVD (co-produced by Masked Republic) is called “Mexico vs. The Border Patrol” and includes matches featuring Blue Demon Jr., Rey Misterio Sr., Super Crazy, Shocker, The Border Patrol, and more. The DVD also features a bonus never before seen Steel Cage Match and deleted scenes from PWR’s “Uprising” web series. It’s on sale for only $7 at Wal-Mart and available at Best Buy ($8.99) and Amazon ($9.98) as well.

Luchador Arrested In Connection with Drug Cartel
This week former luchador Jose Alberto Loera Rodriguez was arrested in connection with a huge attack on a casino in Monterrey, Mexico on 08/25. Rodriguez wrestled under the name Voltaje Negro for several years in the Monterrey area. Rodriguez was one of the leaders of the drug cartels known as the Zetas. He and several others were arrested by the Mexican Federales in a safe house where numerous assault rifles, grenade launchers, and armored vehicles were stored. The Federales claim that Rodriguez handles security for man of the Zetaz large drug deals as well as ordering extortions, kidnappings, and hits (homicides) for the cartel. This is a bizarre story, especially considering that Rodriguez was only a part of the organization for a little over 6 months.
IWL Strips Tag Team Titles
This week the IWL stripped X-Fly & Bestia 666 of the IWL Tag Team Titles because they defended the belts without IWL’s authorization at another indy show. IWL says they contacted Damian to make sure this would never happen again but he didn’t respond so they stripped the Perros del Mal team of the belts. New champions will be crowned on 10/22 in a Fatal 4-Way Match.

No Dragon Gate?
Since I’ve started doing this column about 3 years ago, the only questions I’ve ever gotten about Dragon Gate are, “why do you cover Dragon Gate in a Lucha column?” I’ve explained it before but it’s always been because Dragon Gate is a Japanese promotion that doesn’t get a lot of love from the internet and combines lucha libre with puro so I included it in this column, but since I NEVER get any questions or comments about Dragon Gate and no one seems to really want to see it covered in this column I will stop doing it from here on out. I will STILL post results, lineups, and news from the Dragon Gate USA events in the Indy & Other News section though.
