TNA Holds “Tryout” In Mexico

Wrestling Observer claims this week that TNA held a “try out” for luchadors at AAA’s 10/21 “Fusion TV” tapings (results below). AAA stars and also indy wrestlers came in and tried out for TNA presumably for the X-Division. Al Snow and Bruce Prichard from TNA were in attendance for this and I’m sure AAA was probably embarrassed to have TNA there with one of the lowest TV Taping attendances for AAA in a while (a little over 300 fans). Al Snow & Bruce Prichard from TNA also had meetings with AAA officials at this event along with scouting talent to bring to TNA. Mesas, Vampiro, & Super Crazy have all wrestled in TNA before, but I would assume more of the Jr. Heavyweights are the guys TNA is looking at for the X-Division. Daga, Aerostar, Extreme Tiger, Fenix, and Chessman are the guys I would imagine would interest TNA from this show. Along with others from AAA’s rosters like Dark Dragon, Drago, Jack Evans, Psicosis, Dinastia, and even Fabi Apache (for the Knockouts).

LUCHA SPOTLIGHT:
Konnan & The Luchadors vs. Jerry Lynn & X-Division

Former WCW star and Lucha superstar Konnan appeared on TNA Wrestling’s very first show in 2002 but did not return until February of 2003. By that point one of the things that had made TNA unique was it’s X-Division, which Konnan claimed was a complete “ripoff” of Lucha Libre. When Konnan returned he came to prove that Lucha was superior to the X-Division while former ECW Champion and TNA “pioneer” Jerry Lynn stood up to him. Konnan acknowledged Lynn’s time in WCW as the masked Mr. JL and how he wrestled Psicosis, Juventud Guerrera, Rey Misterio Jr., and others during that time, which Lynn responded to by saying that he was the only American that could make them “look good.” Every week for 2 months Konnan brought in a different luchador to battle Lynn.

In the first match Konnan enlisted the help of the S.A.T. (Jose & Joel Maximo), cousins of former X-Division Champion Amazing Red, to face off against Lynn in a Triple Threat. During the entire match the S.A.T. double teamed Lynn but miscommunication resulted in Lynn outsmarting the tag team. An irate Konnan then recruited former WCW Cruiserweight Champion Juventud Guerrera the next week and claimed that every X-Division wrestler has studied tape of Juvi at one point or another. After a fantastic match with Juvi, Lynn again was able to pull off the victory following a rollup when it seemed that Juvi was close to a victory. During the match Juvi had shown Lynn respect and in doing so had pissed Konnan off.

For Lynn’s next challenge Konnan recruiting someone that Lynn had history with, former ECW TV Champion “The Insane Luchador” Super Crazy! After yet another fantastic match Lynn still was able to best one of Konnan’s luchadors when Lynn reversed a Crazy Frankensteiner from the top into a rollup. Konnan attacked Crazy after the match, irate at him losing to Lynn. The next week Konnan decided to amp things up a bit by bringing in a top tag team from Mexico: Mexico’s Most Wanted (Damian 666 & Halloween). Lynn teamed with David Young to face off against the violent tag team. During the match Young injured his knee on a dive and Konnan then went after the knee as well leaving Lynn alone against Damian & Halloween. After being double teamed for several minutes Lynn was yet again able to squeak out a victory when it looked like defeat was certain, and an irate Konnan attacked Lynn after the match this time to the point where Mexico’s Most Wanted actually had to restrain him.

Konnan decided it was time to take things into his own hand and got into the ring the next go around teaming with Juventud Guerrera to face Jerry Lynn and young X-Division star Jason Cross. Finally the luchadors were able to gain a victory when Konnan countered a Lynn Sunset Flip attempt and holding onto the ropes for added leverage. The next week would be the culmination of this feud with Konnan and Lynn finally stepping into the ring one-on-one. Before the match Konnan claimed that TNA had taken “70 years of Lucha Libre” and simply renamed the X-Division which Lynn took exception to. Lynn was able to win yet another one after an extremely physical match. The following week Konnan and Lynn had one final face-to-face in the ring. This time Lynn acknowledged the influence Lucha Libre has had on not just the X-Division but also his career. He noted how he and Sean Waltman (X-Pac/Syxx-Pac) would watch lucha tapes to try and pick things up. Lynn put over some of the luchadors he had faced in his career like Dos Caras Sr., Rey Misterio Jr., Villano III, and Los Brazos and said that it was a honor to do so. Konnan shook Lynn’s hand and said Lynn had earned his respect. Following this feud a masked wrestler would attack Lynn repeatedly while Konnan continually denied being any part of it. The masked “luchador” ended up being Kid Kash’s manager/valet Trinity which resulted in her costing Lynn the X-Division Title (and shots at it) several times.
