Viva La Raza! Lucha Weekly
October 2, 2009
By: Josh Boutwell of WrestleView.com
As I?ve already said in my Impact recap, I missed last week due to coming down to the Swine Flu, but this week I will be throwing in all the news and notes (results as well) that I had planned for last week in this week’s edition as well in a jammed packed Viva la Raza. Also, I did a write-up for the big Gran Alternativa Tournament that happened last week and I decided to include it as well despite the Gran Alternativa taking place last week. Let’s get to it!
The History of Gran Alternativa & Info
Since 1994 the CMLL promotion has used the Torneo Gran Alternativa (the tournament was not held in 1997, 2000, & 2002 but was held twice in 1996 & 1998) to help usher in young talent to be seen as equal to other top veteran talent. 8 teams are involved in the tourney and all 8 teams consist of a veteran and a young wrestler. This tournament has helped to build such stars as Hector Garza, Shocker, Rey Bucanero, Ultimo Guerrero, Alan Stone, Mistico, La Mascara, La Sombra, as well as others. Also, great veteran stars (and some legends) such as Negro Casas, Silver King, Emilio Charles Jr., Blue Panther, Felino, Villano IV, El Hijo del Santo, Atlantis, & Perro Aguayo Jr. have helped build these young stars in this tournament. In it’s history only 3 men have won the tournament twice: the legendary Emilio Charles Jr. and the two top current wrestlers in CMLL: Mistico & Ultimo Guerrero. Also, only two men have won the tournament as a young wrestler and then later as a veteran: Mistico & Guerrero once again. In 1994, the tournament’s first year, veteran Negro Casas teamed with then young star Hector Garza (this was even pre-WCW for Garza) and the two team went on to defeat the teams of Halcon Negro Jr. & Dr. Wagner Jr. (another future superstar), Pierroth & Guerrero de la Muerte (now Toxico), and in the finals Satanico & Arkangel de la Muerte. Garza is now one of the top wrestlers in CMLL (as well as in AAA in the past) and has traveled all over the world competing in such companies as WCW and TNA Wrestling in America. In 1995 the team of Silver King & Shocker went onto win the tournament defeating Pierroth Jr. & Chicago Express, Bestia Salvaje & Corazon Salvaje (now known as Azazel), and Dr. Wagner Jr. & Astro Rey Jr. (who later became Mephisto) along the way. Shocker, like Garza, is now a top star in CMLL (also was in AAA as well) and has also traveled all over the world competing for TNA (like Garza) and even was the star of a McDonalds commercial a few years ago. In 1996 two different tournaments were held. In the first, the team of Bestia Salvaje & Chicago Express won the tourney defeating Dos Caras Sr. & Bronco, El Hijo del Santo & Olimpico (a huge win), and Atlantis & Atlantico in the finals. Chicago Express is one of the few exceptions to the rule as he never really got going anywhere. The 2nd tournament that year was a bit more successful in the long run as Emilio Charles Jr. teamed up with the young Rey Bucanero to win it defeating the teams of Lizmark Jr. & Jaguar, Satanico & Karloff Lagarde Jr., and Hector Garza & Mr. Niebla. Bucanero went onto become a very successful star in CMLL winning several championships and too has competed in both the United States and Japan. In 1998 Emilio Charles Jr. repeated this time teaming with Tony Rivera to defeat Bestia Salvaje & Guerrero de la Muerte in the finals. Rivera has since garnered moderate success around Mexico in both CMLL and IWRG. In 1999 once again two tournaments were held in the year. The first saw the team of the legendary Blue Panther & the young and hungry Ultimo Guerrero winning the tourney defeating great teams like the legendary Fuerza Guerrera & Rey Bucanero, the previous years winners Emilio Charles Jr. & Tony Rivera, and in the finals Mr. Niebla & Atlantico. Guerrero has since gone onto become one of the biggest stars in CMLL as well as Mexico in general and has too competed all over the world. The 2nd tourney in 1999 saw the team of Felino & Tigre Blanco win it and defeat the legendary Mascara Ano 2000 & Sangre Azteca, Ringo Mendoza & Ricky Marvin, and Scorpio jr. & Fugaz (now known as Ramstein). In 2001 the team of Olimpico & Psicodelico Jr. (the son of the original and cousin of Dos Caras Jr.) teamed up to win this years tournament defeating Gran Markus Jr. & Dr. X, Blue Panther & Virus, and Black Warrior & Sangre Azteca on the way to their win. Psicodelico Jr. bounced around Mexico and the United States wrestling for various INDY’s after leaving CMLL before singing a developmental contract with the WWE. He has since been released by the WWE, however. In 2003 Villano IV teamed with Alan Stone to defeat Mascara Ano 2000 & Sagrado in the finals. Alan Stone has become a midcard fixture in Mexico for CMLL and AAA (currently) as well as forming a great tag team wtih his brother. In 2004 the legendary El Hijo del Santo teamed up with the man, that at that time, was seen as the future of the business in Mistico to win the tournament. The historic duo defeated the father-son team of Misterioso I & Misterioso II, Atlantis & Volador Jr., and Ultimo Guerrero and Dr. X along the way. Mistico, along with Guerrero, are probably the biggest success stories of this tourney. After this tourney Mistico went straight into the Main Event and hasn’t left since. In 2005 Atlantis & La Mascara teamed up to win the tourney defeating Damian666 & Apocalipsis, Ultimo Guerrero & Sangre Azteca, and Dr. Wagner Jr. & Misterioso II along the way. La Mascara is currently one of the top young stars in CMLL. In ’06 Perro Aguayo Jr. teamed up with Misterioso II (in his 3rd attempt in the tourney) to win it defeating Lizmark Jr. & Mascara Purpura, Hectro Garza & Hombre sin Nombre, and Ultimo Guerrero & Nitro along the way. In 2007 Mistico returned to the Gran Alternativa this time as a veteran and he teamed with La Sombra to win it again beating Heavy Metal & Super Nova, Dr. Wagner Jr. & Mascara Purpura, and Ultimo Guerrero & Euforia along the way. La Sombra has since become, like Mascara, one of the top young up-and-comers really getting noticed in 2008 and forming a great tag team with Volador Jr. eventually winning the Tag Titles. Last year Ultimo Guerrero teamed with youngster Dragon Rojo Jr. to win the tourney defeating Shocker & Angel Azteca Jr., Blue Panther & Axel, and Dos Caras Jr. & Metalik. The tournament was actually the debut of the Dragon Rojo Jr. persona (he had previously wrestled as Diamante Negro Jr.). Rojo is now a member of the Poder Mexica group is a co-holder of the CMLL World Trios Titles. This years tournament feature great young-veteran teams such as Angel de Oro & Mistico, Blue Panther & Rey Cometa, Rouge & Shocker, Hector Garza & Angel de Plata, Atlantis & Camorra, Mr. Niebla & Tiger Kid, Averno & Olvora, and Yujiro & Semental (which I’m not sure who is who because Semental debuted in 2005 while Yujiro debuted only a year earlier). The teams to really watch this year are Mistico & Angel de Oro and Blue Panther & Rey Cometa. On 09/25 Shigeo Okumura teamed with Yujiro and won the 2009 Gran Alternativa Tournament and for the first time a Japanese tandem walked away with the tourney crown.
CMLL Posts Preview Videos of Anniversary Show
Earlier this week CMLL posted special videos on their official youtube page previewing the big Anniversary Show that went down this past weekend. The first video is an awesome video that shows off CMLL’s new stage/ramp and takes a special trip around the arena as the company is getting ready for the show. Setting up the stages, lights, cameras, etc. and then the 2nd video shows highlights from the Womens Match featuring Dark Angel & Lady Apache facing Amapola & Hiroka. The third video features highlights from the Minis Match pitting Bam Bam, Electrico, & Pequeno Olimpico against Pequeno Damian666, Pequeno Warrior, & Pierrothito. The the show show should be debuting on Mexican TV in October. The videos are below:

* NOTES *
– Said to be a sellout or at least very close.
– In the Segunda Bam Bam was stretchered out after the match.
– In the 3rd fall of the 4th match La Sombra were a black Spiderman (Venom?) type of gear while Volador wore a new half Volador and half Joker mask. Volador was said to have been very off in this match and seemed to have some type of foot or leg injury early on. Averno pulled on the mask of Volador causing the DQ.
– In the Semi-Main Shocker was pulled from the show due to no showing some shows this week (or maybe he just no showed this one) and was replaced by Atlantis. Liger got the pin in the third fall on Guerrero with his feet on the ropes.
– In the Main Event Mistico had La Sombra in his corner and Negro had Felino in his. Mistico took the first fall, Negro the 2nd, and Mistico got the 3rd fall to take the hair of Negro Casas. The match went around 27 minutes total and afterwards Mistico challenged Felino and belted him with a trash can. This was Mistico’s 7th Luchas de Apuesstas and he’s undefeated in those bouts taking the hair of Antrax & Ebola (in a Double Hair vs. Mask Match), Misterioso II, and now Negro Casas as well as the masks of Black Warrior, Hijo del Diablo, Sepulturero, & Skayde. This was Negro’s 22nd Apuestas and only his 6th loss in such a match.

11) CMLL Heavyweight Title: Ultimo Guerrero (c) def. Jushin Thunder Liger to retain the title!
* NOTES *
– Yujiro was originally teaming with Semental (which made NO sense because Yujiro debuted in 2004 and Semental in 2005) but Shigeo Okumura came out and they beat down Semental (which MAKES sense because Okumura is an actual veteran). Yujiro said he refused to team with anyone other than another Japanese wrestler.
– This was Pierrothito’s first title defense of the Lightweight Title and obviously his first successful defense.
– Yujiro & Shigeo become the first Japanese tandem to win the Gran Alternativa.
– Guerrero successfully defended his belt for the 7th time which moves him into sole 2nd place for the most the successful Heavyweight Title defenses. Only Universo 2000 is ahead of him with 16, but it should be noted that not even Universo 2000 had this many defenses in a one year time span (Universo’s big title run spanned from 1999 until 2003).

Go Shiozaki Brings GHC Heavyweight Championship to AAA
Pro Wrestling NOAH’s Go Shiozaki will be coming to AAA down in Mexico in October as backup for Kenzo Suzuki’s La Yakuza faction. Shiozaki is the current reigning GHC (Global Honor Crown) Heavyweight Champion of the NOAH promotion in Japan, one of the more prestigious belts in all of Japan. Shiozak just retained his belt against challenger, Akitoshi Saito, earlier this week. La Yakuza has been down a man since El Oriental left AAA. Shiozaki’s first match in AAA will be for the 10/09 TV Taping when La Yakuza face’s Dr. Wagner’s La Wagnermania faction (Dr. Wagner Jr., Silver King, & Ultimo Gladiador) in a Trios Matchup. It is unknown just how long Go will be in Mexico (probably a few weeks like NOAH’s other ace, KENTA, does when he comes) or whether he will defend his Title or not.
Charly Manson Leaves AAA
This week Charly Manson left the AAA promotion only days before his big Hair vs. Hair showdown with Chessman at the “Heroes Immortales” event. Manson was eventually replaced in the event by his brother, Electroshock, after AAA postured for several days claiming that Manson would have to show up due to a contract (which there obviously wasn’t). Meanwhile, Charly Manson was announced as the newest member of the Perros del Mal promotion along with El Oriental & Lizmark Jr. (who recently left CMLL as well)! The following is the first picture of Perro Aguayo Jr. & Charly (courtesy of La Wagnermania):
Apparently Manson had been unhappy with AAA for quite some time and finally decided to bail, probably before he got his head shaved.

3) Hardcore Steel Cage Match: Gronda, Nicho el Millionario, & Joe Lider def. Gronda II, Decnnis, & El Elegido
4) AAA Reina de Reinas Title Bull Terrier Match: Sexy Star def. Fabi Apache (c) to win the title!

6) 2009 Copa Pena: Cibernetico def. La Parka Jr., Octagon, Silver King, Alan Stone, El Zorro, Ultimo Gladiador, Kenzo Suzuki, Electroshock, Marco Corleone, Pimpinela Escarlata, Ozz, & Konnan Big
7) AAA Mega-Heavyweight Title: Dr. Wagner Jr. (c) def. El Mesias to retain the title!
* NOTES *
– Tiger wins the Cruiserweight Title for the 2nd time. It would be nice if maybe they started a one-on-one feud over the belt or at least put some different guys in thet title hunt.
– Elegido got put through a table and then pinned in the Hardcore Cage Match.
– Sexy Star wins the Reina de Reinas Title for the first time (which AAA is now recognizing as an Official Championship). After the match Konnan brought his new chicks out and they put the strap on Sexy but then turned on her and beat her down. So a nice swerve there, we’ll see where it goes.
– Of course Charly Manson has left AAA so he was obviously not going to be there for the Hair Match. AAA brought out 4 possible replacements for Chessman to choose from. The choices were La Parka Jr., El Zorro, Cibernetico, & Konnan Big (oh good god), but before Chessman could make his choice Electroshock (real life brother of Manson) walked out and demanded to replace his brother. It was granted and the fight was on. Said to be a ton of blood in this one and Konnan (the real Konnan not that goof Konnan Big) actually ended up throwing powder in Electro’s face because he turned his back on the Legion. They shaved Electro’s head and then La Parka Jr. came out and grabbed referee Hijo de Tirantes and shaved his head for not ‘seeing’ what happened with the powder.
– Konnan Big was the surprise entrant in the Pena Cup, joy. It wasn’t a gauntlet match this year, instead just a big Battle Royal.
– Wagner retains his belt for the 2nd time.
