A video plays showcasing WrestleMania through the years, leading us to this year’s show with a Fatal 4-Way Elimination Match for the WWF Championship. Triple H defends against The Rock, The Big Show, and Mick Foley with a McMahon in every corner.

We see a big pyrotechnics display in the Arrowhead Pond before abruptly cutting to the ring with The Godfather and D’Lo Brown already in it. Ice-T had accompanied them to the ring singing a new song for The Godfather, but it was edited out on the WWE Network version.

The Godfather says it’s time for everyone to come aboard the Ho Train. Godfather says everyone knows he’s been pimping hoes nationwide. Take that fatty out and say, “Pimpin’ ain’t easy!”

Winners by Pinfall: The Big Boss Man and Bull Buchanan

After the match, Boss Man and Buchanan angrily chase away the scantily clad hos (WWF’s terminology, not mine). Godfather does not look happy in the ring.

Mike’s Thoughts: Super blah opener for the show. The Godfather was super over (wow was he amped up for his promo before the match) and the crowd loved everything he did, but in terms of action this was sloppy and largely bad. One of the more cringey spots was Godfather mistiming a clothesline and hitting the referee, who didn’t go down since it wasn’t a spot. Buchanan was impressive with his springboards and dives, but that’s about it. Rough way to kick off WrestleMania 2000.

WWF Champion Triple H is backstage with his wife, WWF Women’s Champion Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley. Triple H talks about the McMahon-Helmsley Era putting on the biggest WrestleMania of all time. Stephanie says it doesn’t get better than this.

The crowd roars. 10 seconds left. Hardcore Holly hits Tazz with a candy jar! Hardcore Holly covers Crash Holly and the referee inexplicably stops counting with one second remaining.

There’s mass confusion as obviously the finish got messed up. Crash Holly walks off with the Hardcore Championship, but Hardcore Holly is declared the winner and new champion despite the referee never counting the pin.

Winner by Pinfall and new WWF Hardcore Champion: Hardcore Holly

Mike’s Thoughts: What an absolute mess. 15 minutes of meaningless weapon shots, blood, and each member of the Mean Street Posse briefly winning the Hardcore Championship. Cap that off with a completely botched finish and you’ve got a hideous WrestleMania match. That box fan really messed Crash Holly and Pete Gas up. So much carnage for so little heat.

Mike’s Thoughts: What a match. This was a crazy car wreck, but somehow it all made sense. So much great action in this. This was really the kickoff of a series of tremendous weapons matches with these three teams, culminating in the first ever TLC match (and the many to follow). Awesome to watch all six of these guys so young and making themselves into legends. Definitely career shortening stuff, but it was killer. This definitely picked up this show because it has been awful so far.

Foley wants people talking about this match for the next 10 years. Tonight, is like a fairy tale for him. So, for Triple H, Rock, and Big Show, fairy tales can come true, they can happen to you… BUT IT WON’T. Tonight, fairy tales will come true for him. BANG-BANG!

Mike’s Thoughts: Actually, a pretty good match, which shouldn’t be surprising considering the Radicalz were having to carry the brunt of it. The action with The Radicalz and Too Cool was good. The stuff with Chyna was weak, as it always was throughout her career, but her interactions with Guerrero were great and her handspring back elbows were super crisp. Guerrero was so damn good.

Mike’s Thoughts: This match should have been awesome. It should have been an all-time great WrestleMania wrestling match considering the three guys involved… but this was missing something in a big way. There was no heat, there were clunky moments, no flow to it… just a mess. I haven’t seen this match in years (close to 18 probably) and I don’t remember it being this poor. It was the first WrestleMania for all three guys. Particularly with Angle, who only debuted at Survivor Series 1999, maybe they were all feeling the butterflies? Either way it was off. Still a good match, but you know it could have and probably should have been better.

Michael Cole is backstage with Vince McMahon. Will he be a factor in the match tonight? McMahon says he’s always a factor wherever he is. The Rock is very confident about becoming WWF Champion tonight at WrestleMania and is confident whether McMahon is in his corner or not. Will the other three McMahon family members be factors? McMahon says he’s heard that his family is dysfunctional… he guaranteed to make things right at WrestleMania.

Elsewhere backstage, Triple H is talking with Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley. Triple H says it’s not about what’s right or wrong. It’s about who is the best. Tonight, he’ll prove it to the world and show that he is The Game and the World Wrestling Federation Champion. He is that damn good.

Too Cool runs down to the ring and get the crowd pumped up for a dance. All of a sudden, the San Diego Chicken gets in the ring. Kane looks at the chicken. Last year, Pete Rose was wearing the outfit. Rikishi goes to walk off on the dance, but Grand Master Sexay pulls out his yellow sunglasses. Too Cool, Rikishi, and the San Diego Chicken do their dance.

After the dance is over, Kane grabs the chicken and powers him to the corner. All of a sudden, Pete Rose runs in the ring with a baseball bat. Rikishi stops Rose from swinging. Rikishi then gives MLB’s all-time hit king a Stinkface! Kane sets his pyro off in the corners, and they all leave the ring.

Mike’s Thoughts: Not much of a match. Just seemed all about making sure Tori got the Stinkface and they worked Pete Rose in. The Pete Rose gag was fun. Wish they kept that going.

After every Chokeslam, Mandible Claw, and Pedigree… The Rock says this… if he could do it all again, he would say, “Finally, The Rock has come back to WrestleMania!” It’s not about the glitz and the glamor, the McMahon family saga, Mick Foley’s final match, or The Big Show. It’s about the WWF Championship. If he has an ounce of sweat to spill or blood to drop, he’ll do what he does best and layeth the smacketh down on their candy asses. The Rock says he’ll do it for the millions… AND MILLIONS of The Rock’s fans. The People’s Champion says tonight is the night.

Video Package: WrestleMania 2000 highlights

Mike’s Thoughts: This main event stunk. It dragged something fierce and went way too long. When it came down to The Rock and Triple H, you’d think it would be nuclear heat. It was silence. The crowd was mostly dead throughout the match. The Mick Foley retirement was ok, but the No Way Out moment was way more special. If you haven’t ever seen that, get on the WWE Network and watch No Way Out 2000. The ending with the McMahon Family reuniting stunk then and it still stinks now.

A poor ending to what is one of the worst WrestleMania shows of all time. It’s the only WrestleMania without a traditional singles match (the Catfight was anything but traditional). Heels seemed to dominate all night with only three matches ending with a face on top (though one was a two-fall match where the heel also won a fall). It’s a break from the tradition and goes to show why breaking the tradition isn’t always for the best. Change for the sake of change is empty. This concept of no singles matches and heels winning didn’t work. The video game on N64 was so good. You’d think this would have been a good show as well, especially at the height of the WWF’s Attitude Era. Oh well.

What did you think of this show? Did you watch it live? Were you actually there? Let me know in the comments section. See you for the next retro recap where we’ll finish up the WrestleMania section with the classic WrestleMania X-Seven.
