WWF WrestleMania III: Steamboat/Savage, Hulk Hogan Bodyslams Andre, Attendance Numbers

WWF WrestleMania III Retro

With WrestleMania 38 coming up in just over a month – April 2 and 3, emanating from AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas, I thought I would share some of my favorite WrestleMania matches over the next few weeks, leading up to the two-night event.

WrestleMania III is most remembered for the WWF Championship match where Hulk Hogan, successfully defended the WWF Championship against Andre the Giant. Most say that the most iconic moment in that match was when Hogan picked up Andre and body-slammed him on the mat.

For me, the match that may be overlooked, was the match between Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat and “Macho Man” Randy Savage. Steamboat was successful in defeating Savage for the WWF Intercontinental Championship.

I watched WrestleMania III on pay-per-view on satellite television in 1987 at a friend’s house whose parents had a receiver and large satellite on a pole in their backyard, that is similar to the images I found online, which I have attached below.

And yes, I have included a video from WWE’s YouTube Channel with the final minutes of the Steamboat/Savage Intercontinental Championship Match, and the full-match between Hulk Hogan and Andra the Giant.

WrestleMania III took place March 29, 1987 live on PPV and closed circuit television, and emanated from the Pontiac Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan. During the event, WWE had announced an indoor record-breaking attendance of 93,173. Over the years, it has been said that WWE had mildly exaggerated their numbers, and that the actual attendance was just above 78,000.
