Video: “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” profiles WWE’s relationship with Saudi Arabia

HBO has uploaded a clip (above) from last night’s episode of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” where Oliver profiled the sudden disappearance of Saudi national and United States resident/Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Around the 7:00 mark of the video, Oliver examines the new Vision 2030 initiative in Saudi Arabia and the 10-year agreement with WWE to present live events. Oliver looked back at the first WWE event from April, the Greatest Royal Rumble, featuring “wall-to-wall propaganda” about the changes in Saudi Arabia.

Oliver notes that while Mohammad bin Salman has tried to present himself as a progressive, his actions and administration appear to be showing the total opposite (including the controversy surrounding the disappearance of Khashoggi). While WWE isn’t the total focus of the piece, the company is definitely associated in a negative fashion.

As reported earlier, the event is still being listed online by WWE as taking place on November 2. However, any reference to Saudi Arabia has been removed.
