According to reports from Mike Johnson at PWInsider and Dave Meltzer at F4WOnline, Robert Evans is no longer part of the company’s creative writing team over a situation which took place during last weekend’s Hall of Fame at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
It is being reported that a line in the speech Evans wrote that had Hart thanking Vince McMahon for giving him and Jim Neidhart their break together. It is also being said that writers were either told ahead of time or it was expected that they knew Vince McMahon’s name was not to be mentioned in any Hall of Fame speech.
It is noted in Meltzer’s report Evans was berated, and because he was about to be fired, he instead quit on his own. The incident reportedly took place right after Bret Hart and Natalya Neidhart’s speech ended with something of a you can’t fire me because of an I quit scenario. Meltzer also noted according to sources the issue could have been resolved but instead Evans quit. It was also said the thanking of Vince was on the teleprompter which means it gotten past a number of others in the company after Evans had wrote it.
In Mike Tedesco’s Hall of Fame ceremony recap he noted that all of D-Generation X repeatedly, in a joking manner mentioned Vince McMahon’s name that followed with “Thank you Vince” chants from the fans in attendance.
Robert Evans is best known for his time in Ring of Honor from 2010 to 2014 under the in-ring name of R.D. Evans. He also appeared in the CHIKARA promotion between 2011 and 2015 as Archibald Peck.
He first appeared in WWE on the September 13, 2013 episode of Smackdown where he took part in an interview segment where he was slapped by Ryback. Evans re-signed with WWE in 2016 as part of the creative team.
Evans posted to Twitter on Thursday (view below) officially stating he quit WWE.
