Former Intercontinental and Tag Team Champion Curtis Axel released by WWE

Curtis Axel released by WWE

WWE announced today that they have come to terms on the release of Curtis Axel (Joe Hennig).

Axel, the son of WWE Hall of Famer “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig, joined WWE in 2007. As Michael McGillicutty, he debuted as part of the second season of WWE NXT in it’s previous form and later joined the Nexus. During that time, Axel became WWE Tag Team Champion with David Otunga.

In 2013, Hennig was renamed “Curtis Axel” to honor his father’s name and his grandfather’s nickname (Larry “The Axe” Hennig). Hennig would join with Paul Heyman briefly and become the WWE Intercontinental Champion. In recent years, he was a member of the Miztourage and the Social Outcasts before establishing a tag team with Bo Dallas called The B-Team. They won the Raw Tag Team Championship in 2018.
