Cody Rhodes reveals being offered match against Sting prior to AEW departure

In an interview with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Cody Rhodes talked about a number of topics including the preparation for RAW just days after being in Saudi Arabia for WWE Crown Jewel, as well as the layers of storytelling involved in his match against Damian Priest.

Another interesting topic brought up was AEW, particularly with the announcement that Sting was gearing up to end his final run next year.

On the role he had to play in the Icon’s arrival in AEW, Rhodes stated:

“The last match I was offered in AEW was that match [against Sting]. It wasn’t confirmed or anything like that, but just the little I had to do with his debut there is a wonderful memory. I was a little Stinger. Maybe I’ll pull out a Stinger Splash in his honor. Seriously, cheers to a wonderful career.”

Sting is set to have his final match in AEW at Revolution 2024, and will be teaming with Darby Allin and Adam Copeland to take on Luchasaurus, Nick Wayne, and TNT Champion Christian Cage.

Rhodes comes off a victory over Priest at WWE Crown Jewel, following a brief run with the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship alongside Jey Uso.
