Report: Former IWGP Champion currently not factored into WWE’s creative plans

Fightful Select has posted an update on David Finlay, who reportedly a free agent after his contract with NJPW was said to have expired last month.

There had been rumors WWE was ‘heavily interested’ in Finlay. In the update, Fightful Select is reporting that according to their sources, Finlay and WWE have been in contact. However, it is also said Finlay in not currently factored into WWE’s creative plans.

Fightful Select also reiterated from a previous report that NJPW is actively trying to re-sign Finlay.

Finlay’s last match with NJPW was back on February 11, with a loss to Callum Newman at the New Beginning event in Osaka. According to F4WOnline, following the match, Finlay seemed to bid his farewell to the fans and then embracing manager Gedo. At the of the report, Finley is still booked for the New Beginning USA event on February 27. 

Finlay first signed with NJPW back in 2015. He is a one-time IWGP Tag Team Championship holder, an IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion (2 times), a Never Openweight Six- Man Tag Team Champion, winner of the New Japan Cup in 2025 and World League Winner in 2019.

David Finlay is the son of former WCW star and current trainer and assistance coach at the WWE Performance Center, Fit Finlay.
