WWE Smackdown
August 7, 2009
Long Island, NY
Report by: Mike Tedesco of WrestleView.com

?Yes, sir, we promised you a great main event?? The WWE video leads us into the show.

They show a video highlighting the tremendous World Heavyweight Championship match from last week featuring Jeff Hardy defending his title against John Morrison. It was an epic contest that saw both men put it all on the line. John Morrison even kicked out of a Swanton Bomb, something I can?t remember ever happening before. In the end Jeff Hardy hit another Swanton Bomb to secure the win.

CM Punk’s music hits in the arena and he makes his way to the ring. Jim Ross and Todd Grisham welcome us to the show as we?re ready for the Main Event already. Tonight it’s CM Punk vs. Jeff Hardy for the World Heavyweight Championship. Punk grabs a microphone and says he tried so hard to empathize with all of our weaknesses. Punk says he implored every one of us to just say no, and all his empathy got was for us to love Jeff Hardy even more than we already did. However this will not deter him from teaching us the difference between right and wrong. Punk says it’s obviously going to be challenging, but just like any challenge he’s met, he?ll take it head on, like he did last week.

They now show a video package of CM Punk turning on Jeff Hardy after that hard fought Main Event. This was a classic heel turn. Punk busted Hardy open and viciously assaulted him. Punk then announced he?d take his World Heavyweight Title back at the next Smackdown.

Back in live action Punk says he knows why we love Jeff Hardy so much ? we?re just like him. In turn, Jeff Hardy is just like all of us. The reality is none of us have the strength to be straightedge. We gravitate towards Hardy because it’s the easy way out. It’s easy to be weak like Hardy because we can?t be strong like him. Punk says we boo because he tells the truth and it hurts. On our prescription pill bottles it says take one every four hours. Punk knows we gobble four to eight at a time like it’s Pez. That’s drug abuse ? Punk doesn?t do that. Punk also doesn?t smoke, and those who do are stupid. You have to be stupid to not listen to the Surgeon General, especially when he puts it on the box. Then the ?funny cigarettes,? to which the audience cheers and Punk is disgusted. Punk says it’s hazardous to us and illegal. So to those who have taken a puff, we?ve damaged ourselves and broken a law. We?re all criminals, according to Punk.

Punk now talks about alcohol and the audience cheers louder. Punk says he saved the best poison for last because it’s a gateway drug. We all go out for one drink, and then two leads to three, four, shots, and we?re puking at the end of the night. That’s alcoholism. In Punk’s book one drink makes you an alcoholic. Punk understands why we love Jeff and vice versa ? we?re all weak. Punk says whether we like it or not we deserve better. The entire world deserves better. We need a strong leader who will stand up to adversity and just say no. We need a strong leader that will carry the banner of the World Heavyweight Championship with honor, pride, respect, dignity, integrity, and class. What we need is a straightedge World Heavyweight Champion. We need CM Punk. Classic heel stuff ? I love it!

Scott Armstrong, the referee, is in the ring and the bell rings. Justin Roberts announces this bout is for the World Heavyweight Championship. Justin Roberts announces CM Punk and now we wait for Jeff Hardy. The crowd chants and the music finally hits. The arena is filled with the sound of screaming fans as the World Heavyweight Champion makes his way out to the ring. Hardy hits the ring and quickly takes down CM Punk and is pummeling him. The bell hasn?t rung to officially start the match. Scott Armstrong tries to separate them but to no avail. Other officials, including Mike Rotunda and Dean Malenko, run down to establish order. General Manager Theodore Long comes down as well. They finally separate the men.

All of a sudden Vince McMahon’s music hits and they arena pops huge! McMahon does not look happy. McMahon says we?re supposed to have a championship match but Teddy Long can?t control anything. McMahon reminds him that he’s on probation. McMahon says to get everyone in the back so cooler heads can prevail. Since Long can?t maintain order McMahon will find someone who will. McMahon will do what Long should have done ? he’s going to have a guest enforcer to maintain order in the match. The guest enforcer will be? someone we have to wait to find out!

Hardy all of a sudden breaks free of the referees and agents and punches Punk out of the ring. Punk angrily yells back at Hardy as they?re held back. This was a great opening segment.

We?re welcomed back to the show by Todd Grisham and Jim Ross. They discuss the chaos that just went on, stopping the World Heavyweight Championship Match that was to start the show. We?ll have it later tonight with a mystery guest enforcer.

John Morrison’s music hits, and it should be noted that Morrison got a tremendous reception from the crowd.

John Morrison vs. Tyson Kidd

This will be a rematch from last week’s edition of Superstars. John Morrison won that bout.

Morrison charges but Kidd is able to use his momentum to throw him over the top rope. Morrison quickly gets up and looks at David Hart Smith. Natalya then hits him from behind with a forearm that sends him down to his knees. The referee admonishes Natalya so Smith floors Morrison with a forearm to the skull. Morrison slowly gets up and Kidd baseball slides him down into the barricade. Kidd throws him back into the ring and pins him for a two count. We?ll take a break here.

-Commercial Break-

We come back from the break to see Morrison locked in a chin lock. Morrison fights up but Kidd takes him down and really cinches the pressure on the chin lock. Kidd even gets a one count from it. Kidd drops a knee for a two count. Kidd locks the chin lock back on and really wrenches it in. Kidd’s screaming is intense. Kidd transitions it to a crossface chin lock. Nice move! Morrison eventually fights up and elbows out. Kidd jumps on Morrison’s back and locks on a sleeper hold but Morrison backs him into the corner and tosses him off.

Kidd and Morrison trade punches and kicks, with Morrison coming out on top by ducking a kick and kicking Kidd in the face. Morrison goes into the ropes and clotheslines Kidd twice. Morrison sends him into the ropes and hits a jumping back heel kick. Morrison then hits a STANDING Shooting Star Press, incorrectly called a moonsault by JR, and covers him for a near fall! That’s a TREMENDOUS move! Morrison sends Kidd into the corner and charges into a back elbow. Kidd gets on Morrison’s shoulders so Morrison gets him off and rolls him up for a two count. Kidd then immediately catches Morrison in a double scissors arm bar! Nasty looking move! Morrison tries to shift weight to pin Kidd so Kidd lets it go.

Morrison gets stomped and choked on the rope by Kidd. Kidd slingshots over the top rope and leg drops Morrison on the apron. Kidd then springboards off the top rope with a blockbuster for a near fall. Kidd covers again for another near fall. Kidd bounces Morrison off the top turnbuckle and stomps him down in the corner. Kidd charges and Morrison back drops him to the apron. Kidd hits a shoulder thrust and goes for a sunset flip but Morrison rolls through. Morrison goes for the running knee but Kidd avoids it. Kidd hits a spin kick to the midsection and goes into the ropes. Morrison counters a hurricanrana attempt into a sit-out powerbomb for a near fall!

Morrison slides through Kidd’s legs, ducks a clothesline, and hits the Flying Chuck! Morrison then hits Starship Pain, landing on Kidd’s face, and covers for the win! That was nasty!

Winner by Pinfall: John Morrison
Match Rating: ** ?

The Hart Dynasty checks on Tyson Kidd, who may be concussed, at ringside. Morrison really landed on his face. That was a rough landing. The Hart Dynasty helps him to the back as Morrison poses for the camera.

It’s time for Cryme Tyme’s Word Up. Today’s Word of the Day is Pretenda, a fake, a fraud, a wannabe, or a paper champion. They mention some pretendas, like Ashley Simpson and Milli Vanilli. They then show pictures of ?Christina? and ?Showbacca.? They included some pretty funny pictures of Jericho as a woman and Big Show as Chewbacca. They?re interrupted by Jesse. Jesse does some lame raps and even brings out a whistle. Jesse then congratulates them on earning a shot at Jericho and Show. Jesse says he knows JTG will beat Jericho tonight but they need to watch the monitor now, as Jesse is going to ?represent.? That was sad. Cryme Tyme says he’s growing on them.

Still to come tonight is a World Heavyweight Championship contest between Jeff Hardy and CM Punk, with a mystery enforcer.

Did you know last Friday night Smackdown was the #1 program on television among all male viewers, beating all programs on broadcast and cable? Hell yeah Smackdown!

Jesse hits some punches and an inverted atomic drop. Jesse clotheslines him and hits a shoulder block. Jesse tries to pump the crowd up but they boo him! Not exactly the type of reaction they were looking for in the back I?m sure.

Jesse goes to the top rope but Haas cuts him off. Haas attempts a superplex but Jesse holds on and pushes him off. Jesse then hits a big splash off the top rope and gets the win to deafening silence. This was pathetic.

The Smack of the Night is Khali vs. Haas from last week that was deemed a No Contest when Kane interfered. Kane took Ranjin Singh for a bit until Khali took him back.

The Great Khali vs. Ricky Ortiz

I guess after that ridiculously bad segment a few weeks ago, Ortiz is relegated to a squash.

Ortiz kicks at Khali before going into the ropes and getting clotheslined down. Khali hits the Punjabi Plunge and pins Ricky Ortiz for the win!

Winner by Pinfall: The Great Khali
Match Rating: No stars

JR mentions Khali getting the winner’s share of the purse, something that made me very happy. All of a sudden Kane’s music hits and they face the stage to face him. Kane surprises Khali by coming from behind and knocking him over the top rope. Kane then concentrates on Ranjin Singh and captures him. Kane drags Singh into the crowd and stomps him there. Matt Hardy is waiting in the ring. That sunburn looks painful ? maybe that’s why he looks so pissed.

World Heavyweight Champion Jeff Hardy comes out to the ring looking upset. Jeff Hardy gets in the ring and walks right up to his estranged brother, who won?t even look the champion in the eye. JR wonders if the final betrayal could happen tonight.

Mike’s Thoughts

This was a really good Smackdown that had some good matches and a few nice surprises. Most importantly we?ve got two matches made for Summerfest ? er, Summerslam. We?ve got an Intercontinental Title bout between Rey Mysterio and Dolph Ziggler. We?ve also got the World Heavyweight Championship Match determined ? Jeff Hardy vs. CM Punk in a TLC Match!

It was nice to see Matt Hardy return tonight. There was no indication if he was 100%, nor was his injury mentioned, but if he can take a baseball slide in the midsection then I?m sure he’s on the up and up. Matt’s an intriguing character. I?m interested to see if he?ll still be feuding with his brother. He counted the pin but he walked away quickly after that.

CM Punk and Jeff Hardy had a good title match tonight. It wasn?t given a load of time but I guess they had to squeeze in the post match beat down and the brother to brother stare downs. They also probably didn?t want to give away too much. Still it was a great effort. I like that Teddy Long said IF Jeff Hardy can defend the title until Summerslam then Punk will get his shot. I can feel a few more title matches in the remaining weeks with Punk maybe helping Hardy get the wins so he can get his shot. Interesting stuff!

It was nice to see Vince McMahon make a small appearance at the beginning of the show. I?m glad they?re continuing the storyline of Teddy Long being on probation. That’s a storyline that could lead to some good things for us viewers. I?m glad that storyline wasn?t dropped.

Rey Mysterio was great on commentary during the Fatal Four Way. He built up each man as a threat to him and in the end it was Dolph Ziggler. The Intercontinental Championship really feels prestigious again. That’s one thing I?m really happy about.

It was nice to see JTG in a singles match tonight against Chris Jericho. Jericho really helped him along in this match and it was a good one. Maybe one day JTG will venture out on his own. Jericho is a true professional ? he?ll put anyone over and he won?t lose an ounce of steam doing it. What a wrestler. That was some great stuff and Jericho’s arguing with the referee was pretty funny.

I was glad to see John Morrison follow up last week’s epic World Heavyweight Title match with another great match against Tyson Kidd. Morrison is a true main eventer and he looked great in this one, as did Tyson Kidd. Kidd has the potential to be something one day. I wonder where they?ll go with John Morrison for Summerslam. They can?t keep him off that show.

I?m still not interested in Kane vs. Khali. I was actually happy watching Kane drag Ranjin Singh away. Does that make me a bad guy?

Slam Master J needs to go the way of the Pretty Ricky segments. That was terrible. The crowd turned on it big time and WWE didn?t even edit that out. I?m glad about that. Slam Master J even makes Pretty Ricky seem entertaining. Poor Charlie Haas.

Where was my favorite referee in the whole world Charles Robinson tonight? Come back next week, Chaz!

Final Rating: ***
