WWE United States Title History (SmackDown)

As you may have noticed, the United States Championship was first a WCW Title that existed from 1980 - 2001. In 2001, the WCW/ECW Invasion was formed and Booker T was the first champion coming from WCW. Booker handed the title over to Chris Kanyon who later lost to Rhyno. Tajiri, Kurt Angle and Edge all won the title during the Invasion. Edge defeated Test at the 2001 Survivor Series to unify the US Title with the Intercontinental Title.

Then, in late June of 2003, Stephanie McMahon announced that she would be bringing the title and make it exclusive for the SmackDown Brand. A big tournament took place that came down to Billy Gunn, Eddie Guerrero, Matt Hardy & Chris Benoit. Guerrero defeated Gunn and Benoit defeated Hardy which lead to Eddie Guerrero vs. Chris Benoit in the Finals at WWE Vengeance. Guerrero captured the title and is now "technically" the first ever WWE United States Champion.
