WWE Smackdown
February 11, 2011
Green Bay, WI
Report by: Mike Tedesco of Wrestleview.com

“Yes, sir, we promised you a great main event…” The WWE video leads us into the show.

A video recaps the events from last Friday’s Smackdown. Vickie Guerrero and Dolph Ziggler blamed Kelly Kelly for Ziggler’s loss at the Royal Rumble but they figured she’d be the reason he’d win the title later in the night. Kelly Kelly wound up pinning Layla after a Spear to retain the title for Edge. Vickie wasn’t happy about that and fired her immediately after the match. Kelly walked away sobbing as Edge looked on. Vickie then announced that Edge would face Dolph Ziggler again next week with her as the special referee.

The Smackdown video plays and we’re brought into the arena with some fireworks. Josh Mathews, Michael Cole, and the great Booker T welcome us to the show. They put over that they’re in Titletown, USA. Edge will defend the title against Dolph Ziggler with Vickie Guerrero as the guest referee.

Ricardo Rodriguez is in the ring, which is decorated with black carpet and tables with flowers on them. Alberto Del Rio drives into the arena and comes to the ring dressed to compete. They show a replay of Del Rio attacking Hornswoggle last week until Kofi Kingston made the save. Del Rio then ambushed Kingston when his back was turned.

Del Rio tells us his name… but we already know that. Del Rio says even though he’s a great athlete who’s won the biggest Royal Rumble in history and is going to WrestleMania, that doesn’t mean there isn’t love in his heart. Del Rio calls Rodriguez into the ring. Rodriguez comes in with a heart shaped box. Del Rio says he loves his cars, his beautiful country Mexico, and the superstars who want to face him at WrestleMania who will destroy each other at Elimination Chamber. The thing he loves the most, though, is destiny. That heart shaped box had the word inside it. Destiny loves him, Alberto Del Rio. He pulls the word off and it’s a picture of him. Del Rio says Aaron Rodgers may have won the Super Bowl, but unlike him he doesn’t have to pretend to be the World Heavyweight Champion because it’s his destiny. He will win at WrestleMania.

Kofi Kingston’s music hits and he comes out to the stage. Kingston says all Del Rio ever talks about is destiny and the future, like he knows something we don’t. No one knows what the future holds but what he knows is about the past. Kingston remembers Del Rio beating him with that kendo stick last week. Kingston may not know about destiny but he knows about the present because right now it’s them. This is Del Rio’s destiny.

Kingston gets into the ring with a kendo stick and threatens him. Del Rio begs him off and Kingston puts it down. Kingston winks and then cracks him in the arm with it. Kingston smacks him two more times as Del Rio gets out of the ring. Kingston destroys the decorations and smacks the picture of Del Rio.

Kingston hits a beautiful cross-body block for a near fall. Del Rio quickly kicks him and gets him on his shoulders but Kingston gets off. Kingston hits the Ranhei but Del Rio grabs the ropes at two and a half. Kingston signals for his finisher but Del Rio avoids it by getting out of the ring. Kingston follows him outside and Del Rio stuns him with a kick. Del Rio smashes his arm off the steps and kicks it into the steps as well. Del Rio throws him into the ring and hits the Cross Arm Breaker for the win!

Todd Grisham is backstage with the World Heavyweight Champion Edge. Todd asks if Edge thinks Vickie will call it right down the middle. Edge looks shocked at the dumb question and says when pigs fly, and Vickie Guerrero in an airplane doesn’t count. Todd asks how Edge will retain the title and he says he has no idea. Edge looks stressed as he looks at the title.

-Commercial Break-

They show the inside of the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame and the crowd goes nuts. The crowd apparently is booing the pictures of Brett Favre. How can you boo Brett Favre? -Commercial Break-

The announcers remind us of how Rey Mysterio injured “Dashing” Cody Rhodes’s nose last month by giving him a 619 with his knee brace exposed. Michael Cole reports that Cody Rhodes had successful reconstructive surgery on his nose.

Todd Grisham catches Rey Mysterio backstage and asks if he’s heard from Cody Rhodes. Mysterio asks why he would have anything to say to him. It was only a broken nose and it wasn’t intentional. Being a WWE Superstar means that injuries can happen at anytime. Mysterio pretends to show concern, saying he hopes Rhodes can make it through this difficult time. Mysterio says the bottom line is he’s focused on Wade Barrett. Mysterio will win and go to Elimination Chamber to be the new World Champion.

Wade Barrett makes his way to the ring without The Corre by his side. They show a replay of Wade Barrett beating Big Show to qualify for Elimination Chamber with a big assist from Ezekiel Jackson. Barrett has a microphone and says in less than two weeks he will be representing The Corre in Smackdown’s Elimination Chamber. That doesn’t mean he’s in any way better than the rest of The Corre because they’re all equal. All it means is that he’ll be the man to go to WrestleMania as our World Champion. As we’ve already seen earlier tonight, the great master plan of The Corre to revolutionize Smackdown is in full effect. Whether he knows it or not, the next part of the plan lies with Rey Mysterio.

-Commercial Break-

Mike’s Thoughts

This was a very average edition of Smackdown saved by a tremendous surprise in the main event. That was definitely really cool. What an awesome coincidence that they would be doing this show the same week the Packers won the Super Bowl. That definitely got me excited seeing Clay Matthews come out to count the pin. I’m not sure how they’ll explain that (since Vickie is in charge of the show) but there’s probably no need. It was just a cool moment.

I wish I could say the rest of the show was as awesome as that moment but I cannot. It was just a night filled with blink and you miss them matches. I did enjoy the opening segment with Alberto Del Rio and Kofi Kingston. That could be a nice matchup once Del Rio wins the title. I also liked the Rey Mysterio/Wade Barrett match. The post match beatdown on Mysterio and Big Show was an impressive sight, particularly the suplex by Ezekiel Jackson.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see JTG get released very soon. That beatdown he received tonight was of the variety of a soon to be departing superstar.

I was surprised to hear that next week will be the 600th episode of Smackdown. Hopefully they give it some good promotion throughout the week. 600 episodes is definitely an impressive number to reach.

Final Rating: ** 3/4
