Backstage AEW news on Mark Briscoe/Jay Lethal upcoming match on Dynamite; Brian Cage’s contract

During the most recent Battleground Podcast, AEW and ROH owner Tony Khan said that he “fought hard” with his broadcast partner Warner Bros Discovery to get Mark Briscoe vs. Jay Lethal approved for this Wednesday night’s episode of Dynamite. Khan also noted said that Mark and Lethal requested the match, which will take place on what would have been the 39th birthday for Jay Briscoe.

There were reports Warner Bros Discovery have not allowed the Briscoe Brothers to appear on AEW television due to homophobic twitter posts from Jay a few years ago, even though he had apologized. It was reported on Tuesday by F4WOnline that WBD had reversed their decision, allowing AEW to pay tribute to Jay Briscoe and for his brother Mark to appear on AEW television moving forward.

Brian Cage’s AEW contract set to expire in just a matter of weeks

According to F4WOnline and Fightful Select, unless an extension or new deal is reached, ROH Six-Man Tag Team Champion Brian Cage’s AEW contract is said to expiring in just a matter of weeks.

After leaving IMPACT Wrestling in 2020, Cage signed with AEW and debuted in the spring of 2020, debuting at May’s Double or Nothing and winning the Casino Ladder Match. AEW did, much to the surprise of many, picked up his one year extension in the part of last year.

Fightful Select also noted there have been feelers within WWE to see what their interest is in bringing in Cage. However, there is uncertainty if there has been interest between the two sides.

After Cage lost a street fight match to Ricky Starks on the October 8, 2021 episode of AEW Rampage, he disappeared until the September 21, 2022 at Grand Slam episode in Queens, New York.

Cage debuted for Tony Khan’s owned Ring of Honor last April at Supercard of Honor, joining Tully Blanchard Enterprises with Gates of Agony. Now Under The Embassy faction, led by Prince Nana, Cage and the Gates of Agony won the ROH Six-Man Tag Team titles at the December 2022 Final Battle PPV.

Cage’s last match was a win over former IMPACT star Willie Mack on last Friday night’s AEW Rampage. Cage will take on Bryan Danielson on Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite.
