Backstage news on a former champion’s rumored return to WWE

Former WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio claimed last year that he was close to returning to the company.

According to Fightful Select, there is no chance Alberto Del Rio will return to WWE.

Fightful Select notes Del Rio reportedly said he was working his way back into WWE before Vince McMahon left WWE last July. Fightful Select said they recently reached out to a WWE source who completely denied the report.

According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Del Rio claimed following a match back on October 5 that he was on his way back to WWE last year, all the way up until Vince McMahon lost his control and power within the company.

Reports surfaced last December that Del Rio had been in talks with now former WWE Head of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis, with one source saying Del Rio was putting out feelers to WWE. It was further said there was no real interest from WWE for Del Rio to return.

The chances of Del Rio working for any US based promotion are said to be very slim. AEW would not likely have any interest, as Rio’s former girlfriend Saraya works for the company. Furthermore, current AEW World Champion MJW reportedly has referred to Del Rio as an abuser, a drug addict, a poser, a bad promo and a b—-.

WWE fired Del Rio on August 7, 2014 due to “unprofessional conduct” following an altercation with an employee who allegedly had made a racist joke.

Del Rio spent just one year in IMPACT Wrestling under the in-ring name of Alberto El Patron. The company released him from his contract on April 7, 2018 after he legitimately failed to show up for the Lucha Underground vs. IMPACT Wrestling event in New Orleans, LA the previous night.

He continues to wrestle in AAA in Mexico under the name Alberto El Patron.

Del Rio was arrested on May 9, 2020 in San Antonio, Texas after he had allegedly battered and sexually assaulted his then girlfriend. He was booked into the Bexar County jail and was charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of assault causing bodily harm. He was later released on $50,000 bail at approximately 3:30 am local time on May 10, 2020.

On October 9, 2020, he was indicted by a grand jury and formally charged with aggravated kidnapping, sexual assault and two felonies. His trial was delayed multiple times. Then on December 10, 2021, the charges were then dropped after the key witness failed to show up in court.
