According to a report from The Guardian, Stephen Merchant’s 2019 biopic “Fighting With My Family” which is based on the life of Saraya-Jade Bevins, also known as Paige in WWE and Saraya in AEW, has inspired a stage musical based on the film.
Merchant told The Guardian that during the making of the film, he “always thought of it like a musical: a young woman from the ‘chorus line’ fighting to get her big break, surrounded by theatrical, larger-than-life characters and huge sweeping emotions”. Merchant then said he even approached each wrestling match in the film as if it was a new dance number, “building to a big show-stopping finale. The team have captured the humor, grit and heart of the story in a way that feels both faithful to the film and completely fresh.”
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who co-produced the film and also played himself in it, is collaborating on the musical.
The musical will feature a book and lyrics by Jon Brittain and music by Miranda Cooper and Nick Coler. Workshops for the new musical are expected to take place later this year with a public presentation planned for 2027.
At the box office, the film, which starred Florence Pugh as Paige grossed $41.5 million world-wide up against an $11 million budget.
Saraya, under her Paige character returned to WWE at this past Saturday’s WrestleMania 42 Night One. Paige, who was substituting for the injured Nikki Bella, won the WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles with Brie Bella in a Fatal 4-Way Match.
