Former WWE champion talks apology promo, losing trust in himself

In an interview with Wrestling Life, Luke Menzies addressed what his career in WWE looked like after an accident led to serious injury.

Menzies, who won the NXT Tag Team Championship during his run as Ridge Holland, said that he was set for a segment apologizing to Big E after a botched belly-to-belly suplex led to E sustaining a broken neck, but the segment was cut at the last possible second.

I remember the week after we were supposed to go out for a segment on SmackDown. Vince [McMahon] arranged for me to cut an apology promo just before we were about to go out live. Now, I don’t know if this was a test. Pretty poor taste. But we were about to go out for our segment. It was live.

I remember him counting me down. It was just like an apology thing, and I didn’t know what I was going to say. I was just going to be as real as I could, speak from the heart. It went like 10, 9, 8, and it got to 5, 4… then I saw Vince, Bruce just go like nah. They cut it at the last minute, the last second. Then we just went out for the segment, and I thought from then on, I never felt the same way about the company. I thought that they just did that to mess with me.

Menzies admitted that the accident left him with a lack of trust in himself, recalling the moments that followed that spot.

When the accident happened, we came to the back and Brock [Lesnar] was sitting next to Vince [McMahon]. There was other top stars there and you want to work with these guys. It’s like ‘Well, that’s my chance of working with these guys gone because they ain’t going to trust me.’ I almost didn’t trust myself again in the ring and I think that affected my performances as well.

His run with WWE came to an abrupt end following an injury sustained at the TNA IMPACT tapings in September 2025, with his contract being terminated in early November after remarks made about being “hung out to dry” with his non-renewal coming up later that month.
