As part of an interview with SBJ recorded April 15, Nick Khan addressed plans regarding the main event of WrestleMania 40.
At the 2024 edition of the company’s biggest event, The Rock teamed with Roman Reigns to face Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins to headline night one, before Reigns and Rhodes wrestled for the Undisputed WWE Championship in the following night’s main event.
The WWE President claimed that the plan never changed for the show, despite fan backlash seemingly changing what appeared to be a plan for Reigns to defend against The Rock:
The plan was always how it ended up. Sometimes, it’s a predetermined outcome in wrestling. You want to throw the fans off and let things bake, and then boom, it ends up the way we wanted it to end up. It never changed. That was just online rumors and gossip that we were changing it. It never changed. We convinced Dwayne Johnson to come back. He’s on our board of directors. It was a tag team match. He was in phenomenal shape. He did everything we asked of him and then some, but that was always the result we were looking for.
The idea that plans changed for the main event were further cemented by a WWE-produced documentary on the event.
