WWE Superstars
June 18, 2009
Charlotte, NC/Roanoke, VA
Report by: Mike Tedesco of WrestleView.com

The Superstars video plays and we?re brought into the arena with a great pyro display. Michael Cole and Jerry ?The King? Lawler welcome us to the show. Our Main Event will be ECW’s contribution and their first time in the Main Event of Superstars as Christian and Unified Tag Team Champion Carlito and Primo will take on Jack Swagger and the Hart Dynasty.

Santino Marella’s music hits and he makes his way to the ring. Marella gets in and grabs a mic because he has ?little bit message? for Chavo Guerrero. Marella says he must be so lonely now that his Aunt Vickie went ?wee, wee, wee all the way home,? but that wasn?t his fault. That was the work of his ?very hot? sister Santina. Tonight will be his fault though. Tonight he’s going to administer a fate that’s even worse than waking up in the morning and being Chavo Guerrero. Those are ?the words for fighting.? Marella tells him to come down and take his beating like ?a mans.?

Santino Marella vs. Chavo Guerrero

The match begins and Guerrero immediately digs in with a kick and some clubs to the back. Guerrero beats him down to the mat before getting him up and bouncing his head off the turnbuckle. Guerrero chokes him on the rope for a few seconds before knocking him into the corner with a European Uppercut and choking him with his foot. Guerrero lays in some more punches before going for a whip but Marella cartwheels out of it and clotheslines Guerrero down. Marella marches towards Guerrero in the corner but Guerrero hits him with a kick and throws him shoulder first into the ring post. Guerrero punches Marella down before hitting a belly to back suplex for a one count. Guerrero slaps Marella in the back of the head before locking on the abdominal stretch. The crowd gets Marella into it and Santino ?hulks up? before hip tossing Guerrero off.

Marella marches towards Guerrero again and gets pulled face first into the middle turnbuckle. Guerrero clubs Marella until the referee backs him up. Guerrero comes toward Marella but gets a back elbow for his trouble. Guerrero talks a little trash before Marella says ?I?m not a-scared of you.? Guerrero runs but Marella ducks and Guerrero hits the turnbuckle hard. Marella says ?You did that to yourself? before ducking two right hands and connecting with a right hand that staggers Guerrero. Marella has an Irish whip reversed on him but he holds onto the ropes. Guerrero angrily charges but Marella ducks and Guerrero sails out of the ring. That seems to be the story of this match. Santino ducks and Guerrero always misses like a buffoon.

Marella looks a little intense before baseball sliding Guerrero down. Marella puts Guerrero back in the ring but eats a kick as he enters. Guerrero does the Eddie Guerrero arm shake before going for the Three Amigos. Right before he hits the third Marella blocks it and hits Guerrero with Bill Goldberg’s Jackhammer. Marella now says he’s going up top but slips once he gets there so he comes off the second rope into Guerrero’s boot and Guerrero pins him for the win.

Winner by Pinfall: Chavo Guerrero

Michael Cole says it was shocking that Santino Marella went up to the top rope and that sums up the whole week. What a connection. This brings us into the Raw Rebound. Randy Orton is WWE Champion, again, and Donald Trump now owns Raw. It’s really unbelievable that some media outlets believed that to be true. It’s also unbelievable how the Main Event scene on Raw hasn?t changed one bit. Same guys. It’s also unbelievable how much make-up Donald Trump had on. I hope Trump is good.

Did you know WWE has produced 20 books that made the New York Times Best-Sellers list?

Zack Ryder vs. Mike Williams

They lock up and Ryder quickly pushes him off to give him a ?woo, woo, woo.? Josh Matthews says this is Ryder’s first time on Superstars. Apparently he missed the other two times, like last week’s episode? They circle the ring before locking up and Ryder quickly gets a hammerlock. Ryder turns Williams into a forearm and bounces his head off the turnbuckle. Ryder brings him out and cracks him in the face with a stiff forearm. Ryder sends Williams into the ropes but lowers his head so Williams leapfrogs over him and takes him down with a dropkick. Williams now takes him down with a headlock takeover. Ryder gets to his feet and counters with a back suplex.

Ryder kicks him in the ribs and assaults him for a few before being backed away by the ref. Ryder approaches him and gets met with a punch and a discus punch. Williams sends Ryder into the ropes but lowers his head and gets clubbed down. Ryder hits a leg-line, which is a really impressive move. Ryder now hits Williams with the Zack Attack, which is like a reverse of MVP’s Playmaker, and gets the win.

Winner by Pinfall: Zack Ryder
Match Rating: ? *

Backstage Maria is coming towards the ring in a skimpy referee’s outfit. She?ll be officiating the next match.

Jim Ross and Todd Grisham welcome us back to the show. This is Smackdown’s contribution to the show this week.

Eve Torres vs. Layla
Guest Referee: Maria

They air a little video recap of the feud that started seven weeks ago in a dance off. They really milked this one. Maria calls for the bell and they quickly lock up. Layla pushes her away and they lock up again. Layla quickly gets out and wrenches the arm. She holds it for a bit until Eve cartwheels out and wrenches Layla down. Eve grounds Layla with a hammerlock and Layla yells that she’s cheating. Layla gets to her feet but Eve keeps it on so Layla back elbows her in the face. Layla goes for a snapmare but it’s blocked a few times. Eve goes for a back suplex but Layla brings the force to her side and finally hits the snapmare. Layla hits a low dropkick to the head for a one count.

Layla picks her up but Eve breaks the grip and forearms her. A whip is reversed on her but she slides under Layla and hits her with an arm drag. Eve hits a body slam for a two count. Layla comes back with some punches and sends Eve into the corner but Eve slingshots over her. Layla then kicks her in the knee and pins her for a two count. Layla now works on the knee, trying to hyperextend it, and then just flat out trying to break the limb. Eve attempts to get up but Layla kicks her in the knee and stretches it again. Layla pulls it until Eve kicks her off twice and clotheslines her down twice. Eve hits a one-legged dropkick and then a snap suplex (I guess?) for a two count. Eve pulls on the hair but Layla kicks her in the face. Eve kicks her back and hits a handspring standing moonsault for the win! That was an impressive move but made little sense as Layla was working on the leg really well.

Winner by Pinfall: Eve Torres

Maria now wants them to shake hands and they finally do. The hatchet has been buried, for now. Layla still looks upset.

Still to come is the big Six Man Tag as Christian, Carlito and Primo will take on Jack Swagger and the Hart Dynasty.

A really tremendous video package for Edge airs. I love these videos.

We now go to the final moments of the Triple Threat Match from Raw for the World Heavyweight Championship. Punk looked down and out after Edge pushed him off the turnbuckle but he wound up stealing the victory from Jeff Hardy after Hardy had it won with the Swanton Bomb. Can you say heel turn? I?m really loving the teases so far.

Tomorrow night’s Smackdown will be a loaded affair as we?ll see CM Punk take on Rey Mysterio and Jeff Hardy take on Chris Jericho. Be sure to catch my recap tomorrow night if you miss the show. Heck, even if you do, stop on by anyway.

Jack Swagger’s music hits and our Main Event will be next.

Jack Swagger & The Hart Dynasty vs. Christian, Carlito & Primo

My favorite referee in the whole world Charles Robinson is officiating this match. Carlito is starting it out against David Hart Smith. They circle the ring before locking up. Smith powers Carlito into the corner and gives a relatively clean break? that is until he charges but Carlito boots him in the midsection. Carlito hits some lefts before tagging Primo. They whip Smith into the ropes, hit a double kick, and they hit dual dropkicks to the side of his head, sandwiching him. A very impressive move that gets Primo a one count. Smith manages to head-butt Primo in the midsection and tag in the powerful Jack Swagger.

Swagger runs in but Primo ducks a clothesline and takes him down with a dropkick. Primo tags in Christian, who hits Swagger with a springboard sunset flip for a two count. Swagger cuts Christian off by powering him into the corner but eats a back elbow when he approaches. Christian comes off the second rope with a back elbow and covers for a near fall. Christian quickly knocks Smith and Kidd off the apron before turning into a double leg take down for a two count. Swagger drags Christian to his corner and tags in Tyson Kidd. Kidd hits Christian with a stomp before bouncing the head off the turnbuckle. Kidd kicks him down and chokes him with his foot before tagging Smith back in. Smith kicks Christian after Kidd held him wide open and floors him with a punch. Smith hits a nice leg drop for a two count.

Smith hits a nice body slam before going to the second rope and jumping right into Christian’s boots. Isn?t that what defeated Santino Marella earlier in the night? Christian now tags in Primo Colon. Primo hits some lefts. He has a whip reversed on him but he quickly springboards off the second rope with a cross-body for a two count. Smith cuts him off with a knee to the midsection but Primo reverses him on a toss to the outside. Tyson Kidd charges and gets back dropped out of the ring on top of Smith! Primo goes for a running dive but Natalya grabs his leg. Smith quickly gets back in and face plants him. Smith kicks and punches him in his corner before getting admonished, leaving Primo open to be choked by both Tyson Kidd and Jack Swagger. We?ll finish this after the break.

-Commercial Break-

We come back from the break to see Primo still in near the heel corner as Jack Swagger holds him in a headlock. Primo gets to his feet but Swagger quickly slams him down. Swagger tags in Smith, who comes in and kicks Primo in the ribs. Smith hits a beautiful neckbreaker for a near fall. Smith stomps Primo and knees him before tagging in Tyson Kidd. Smith sends Primo into the ropes and hits a drop-toe-hold just as Kidd is coming with a low dropkick to the face. Nice move that gets Kidd a near fall. Kidd locks on a front face lock. Primo gets to his feet but is unable to fight Kidd off. Kidd quickly gets Primo to his corner and Swagger tags in. Swagger rolls Primo up but Primo is hugging the ropes. Primo now goes outside for a breather.

Kidd kicks Primo in the face as the referee is distracted. Swagger goes to bring him in but Primo shoulders him and comes over the top rope with a roll up for a two count. Primo dives for his corner but Swagger gets him on his shoulder and powers him to his corner where David Hart Smith tags in. Smith pummels Primo with a kick before sending Primo into the ropes and hitting a nasty powerslam for a near fall. Smith now locks on a nice chin lock. Smith grounds him before the crowd finally gets Primo into it and he gets to his feet. Primo attempts to punch out but Smith quickly powers him back to his corner and Tyson Kidd tags in. Kidd kicks him and elbows him in the back of the head before choking him with his foot. Kidd now uses the ropes for a quick choke. Kidd sends Primo into the ropes but Primo ducks the back elbow and they both hit a double clothesline. Kidd is up first but Primo kicks him away and finally tags in Carlito.

Carlito comes in with a clothesline and some punches. Carlito sends him into the ropes, hits a kick, a Million Dollar Knee Lift, and a nice clothesline. A whip gets reversed on him and Carlito attempts to counter with a springboard back elbow but Kidd ducks. Carlito lands on his feet and hits Kidd with a spinebuster for a near fall. Carlito ducks Smith when he charges in and dropkicks him. Swagger then takes him down from behind with a clothesline. Christian quickly comes in and punches him out before hitting an over the top rope splash! Primo then comes in and cross-bodies Smith over the top rope! Carlito and Kidd are now left in the ring. Kidd hits a kick to Carlito and goes over the top rope. Kidd goes for a springboard something but Carlito ducks and hits the Back Stabber for the win!

Winners by Pinfall: Christian, Carlito & Primo

Bump of the Night: Kidd getting back dropped over the top rope onto Smith!

Match of the Night: The Six Man Tag Match **

Mike’s Thoughts

This was the tenth episode of Superstars and I must say this was the weakest one. There wasn?t anything really exciting going on and for the first week it didn?t really feel that special. Could this be the end of the honeymoon or just a night that didn?t click? We?ll soon find out.

ECW contributed two matches to the show tonight, which is a first. The Six Man Tag Team Main Event was a really good match. We?re looking at the future of the WWE in the ring and if that really is the future than it’s a bright future. All these guys are really tremendous performers, particularly the Hart Dynasty, who have that kind of training and timing that can only come from the Dungeon. I?m looking forward to seeing the Hart Dynasty in the coming weeks. Christian, Carlito, and Primo were good as always. They?re also tremendous but that goes without saying.

Zack Ryder looked pretty good in his squash match. There’s a lot of upside to this guy but, in my opinion, he needs a new gimmick, and he needed it yesterday.

Eve Torres and Layla had another match with a very busty Maria refereeing. I hate to keep harping on this but I just don?t see why they put these girls out there with the little training they have. The matches they put together just have no rhythm or psychology to them and make it look really fake. They can do three moves well and the rest is for the birds. We couldn?t have gotten a match with Shelton Benjamin or Charlie Haas in it tonight?

Santino Marella continues to be one of my favorite characters. He was funny tonight and had a good comedy match with Chavo Guerrero. Always good stuff even though this isn?t something I can imagine Guerrero really enjoys doing.
