WWE Royal Rumble History with very first match from 1988

The 2024 WWE Royal Rumble is just around the corner.

The WWE Royal Rumble was original created by wrestler and WWE Hall of Famer Pat Patterson.  The Royal Rumble concept was tested at a house show held at the Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis Missouri back on October 4, 1987.

The very first Royal Rumble took place on January 24, 1988 at the Copps Coliseum (now known as the FirstOntario Center) in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The event, with 18,000 in attendance, aired as a live special on the USA Network.  The following year, WWE started airing the events live on pay-per-view.

The 1988 Royal Rumble was won by WWE Hall of Famer Hacksaw Jim Duggan. You can watch the full match below:

The 2024 WWE Royal Rumble will take place on Saturday, January 27 from Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida (just outside of Tampa Bay). The event will air live on Peacock in the United States and WWE Network everywhere else, beginning at 8:00 pm ET.
