According to PWInsider, Pat McAfee’s return to WWE at Saturday night’s Royal Rumble was a legitimate surprise to just about everyone inside the company. It was said to have been kept a high secret in order to prevent it from leaking out.
It was also noted that not even the majority of the production team knew before McAfee made his way to the ring, prompting a quick scramble to grab a chair and headset for him, so he could join Michael Cole and Corey Graves on commentary.
The report concludes by saying Cole and Graves were also not clued on McAfee’s return as they had prepared as normal to call the show with just the two of them. It was said that the reactions from Cole and Graves on McAfee’s return a legitimate surprise.
As of this writing, there is no word on whether McAfee’s return at the Rumble will lead to him being back on SmackDown, in which Wade Barrett has been filing in for him during his time away as an analyst for ESPN’s College Game Day.
