WWE signs former high school cheerleader to a developmental contract

According to a recent story from the Pittsburgh-Post Gazette, WWE has signed Gina DeLucia to a developmental contract.

DeLucia, who is 24 years old and stands 5′ 5″ was a cheerleader at Mars Area High School and did CrossFit at the University of Mississippi. She also has background in volleyball.

The Post-Gazette also notes that DeLucia was one of eight wrestlers to receive a contract offer from the WWE, and she was also invited to stick around to watch WrestleMania in pro wrestling legend Triple H’s luxury suite at AT&T Stadium. She also was invited to mingle with celebrities and other WWE Superstars.

“I saw that WWE was seeking out new talent. They were looking for athletes who didn’t have any wrestling background, and also looking for performers. With my background, I love to train and love to perform, so I thought it was a perfect fit…I put in my application, and a few days later I got a call back. We chatted over a few interviews and they liked what they saw from me, and then they invited me up to WrestleMania in Dallas for the tryout…they had some of the ‘NXT’ athletes there. They would demonstrate a roll and they wanted to see how adaptable we were and how quickly we could pick up on those things.”

DeLucia said she never dreamed of becoming a professional wrestler, and that she was familiar with “The Rock” and John Cena, but didn’t watch it much on TV.
