Rock’s ‘The Smashing Machine’ bombs in it’s opening weekend

According to a report from Variety, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s The Smashing Machine bombed in it’s opening weekend.

Variety notes the film brought in only $6 million from 3,345 theaters. It was also said those ticket sales were below projections of $8 million to $15 million and marked a career low for Johnson. The report adds that this is a big blow to A24, which spent $50 million to produce the movie and many millions more promoting the film. It is unclear if the film’s disappointing turnout will hurt the chances of any awards.

The report further notes the low ticket sales marked a career low for Johnson, below 2010’s Faster that brought in $8.5 million during it’s opening weekend. (not adjusted for inflation).

The Smashing Machine is based on a true story. It is as a biographical drama about former fighter Mark Kerr, which is also based on the 2002 documentary about his life and career.
