American Flag from WWE HQ building caused thousands to lose power on Saturday night

The big American flag that flew off the WWE Headquarters building on Saturday night and hit a power line, then caught fire, caused thousands in Stamford, Greenwich to lose power, according to a report from the Greenwich Time.

Utility spokesperson Kaitlyn Woods told the Greenwich Time that about 5,000 customers in Stamford lost power immediately, but Eversource was able to restore power to about 3,000 of those customers within 20 minutes.

Per Eversource, there were more than 4,000 outages in Greenwich and 2,700 in Stamford around 6:00 pm local time on Sunday.

Stamford Deputy Fire Chief Matt Palmer confirmed the large flag torn off the roof of the building at 8:44 pm ET on Saturday. Palmer then said the flag had lodged itself on high-voltage wires just adjacent to the Metro North train tracks near the intersection of Atlantic and Manhattan streets – right near the Stamford Train Station.

Palmer did say there was some arcing when the flag came in contact with power lines, but there was no fire when firefighters were at the scene. Palmer further added that the flag was removed early Sunday morning and it was severely damaged.

According to Eversource’s outage tracker, by early Monday morning, the power outages in Greenwich and Stamford had mostly been resolved.

Greg Thompson of News 12 in Stamford Connecticut posted video to X, showing the flag flying off the building on Saturday night.
